This opportunity involves joining the Earth & Environment Team as a full-time Assistant VP, Geotechnical Engineer for our St. Louis, Missouri office. The candidate will provide subject matter technical support and leadership for multi-site / phase due diligence, investigation, remediation, impact assessment, permitting, improvement, and construction of projects in the public and private sectors. Responsibilities include the research, design, concept development, planning, and construction of foundations, retention structures, open pit and underground mines, tunnels, dams, and underground storage. The role requires providing leadership to ensure deliverables meet acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality, while addressing risk, innovation, and future opportunities.

Responsibilities

• Provide oversight with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from the work site, including soil, water, waste material, rock samples, surveys, blueprints, GIS data, subsurface utility information, maps, hydrologic analysis, geologic and geotechnical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.
• Apply high-level geotechnical / geological engineering techniques to identify improvements for various project phases involving complex infrastructure and engineering work, including concept development, preliminary design, final design, procurement, construction, and operation.
• Perform professional geotechnical / geological engineering investigations and inspections of site conditions, including subsurface investigations, foundation engineering, settlement analysis, erosion, lateral earth pressures, geological hazards, groundwater, slope stability, rock slopes, and underground structures to ensure conformance with applicable regulations and permits.
• Develop construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates; prepare safety and phasing plans and update layout plans in coordination with owners, other disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients.
• Manage design and construction of infrastructure projects from proposal to completion, including rehabilitation and reconstruction, grading, drainage, and foundations.
• Oversee the development and implementation of advanced technologies, monitoring devices, building materials, modeling techniques, and operating strategies to ensure safety and functionality and to support future-ready geotechnical design standards.
• Lead larger-scale geotechnical projects, coordinate timelines and budgets, monitor hours and expenses, supervise subcontractors and staff, and ensure satisfactory performance.
• Assist with engineering reviews of permit applications, design plans and specifications, standby plans, contracts, and construction inspections to ensure compliance with regulations and sound engineering practice.
• Engage with public and private entities to discuss engineering / construction challenges and programs.
• Ensure technical reports and presentations clearly explain research findings and recommendations to address design and construction issues or opportunities.
• Develop or grow a client base for high-level geotechnical services, including identifying business development opportunities.
• Mentor staff to support growth and professional development; stay current in geotechnical engineering techniques and practices.
• Collaborate with professionals from other disciplines and jurisdictions on funded improvement and development projects, as well as proposal opportunities.
• Exercise ethical decision-making regarding company resources and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and policies.
• Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
