Description :

Unit provides 24-hour pediatric hospitalists on-site.

Facilities have an average of 35 beds, with an average census of 8 patients.

Ratios are 4 patients to 1 nurse both days and nights.

Certifications needed are BLS and PALS.

The electronic medical record system used is Cerner.

Charge RNs do not take patients.

Nurse aides are available based on census.

Weekend requirements include working every other weekend.

Two major holidays are required.

Scrub color is navy.

There is telemetry monitoring available, but no tech is present.

There are no ventilators on the unit.

Pediatric hospitalists or intensivists are in-house 24 / 7.

There is no IV team available.

Respiratory therapy and pharmacy services are available 24 / 7.

When the census drops, RNs may be placed on standby.

Unit orientation includes a total of 4 shifts; 2 in pediatrics, 1 in PICU, and 1 in burn.

The shift types involve a break structure of one 30-minute clock-out break and three 15-minute breaks per shift.

Types of patients include those with respiratory distress, appendectomy needs, dehydration, DKA, seizures, and general surgeries.

Floating may occur to the PICU for low acuity cases and burn ICU for appropriate pediatric care.

Ages up to 13 years are admitted, although older developmentally challenged patients may also be accepted.

Medfusion pumps are used for administration.
