Job Overview

As one of the oldest medical schools in the country, the UC College of Medicine has a reputation for training best-in-class health care professionals and developing cutting-edge procedures and research that improves the health and clinical care of patients. The UC College of Medicine, Division of Transplant Surgery is looking for an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) to provide direct patient care for liver, kidney and pancreas transplant patients, as well as hepatobiliary surgical patients and vascular access patients, in the surgical intensive care unit, med / surg floor, and outpatient clinic under direction of transplant surgeons and physicians. The candidate will be the seventh Advanced Practice Provider on the team and will interact closely with a large multi-disciplinary group including surgeons, physicians, pharmacists, dieticians, nurse coordinators, nurses, trainees (fellows, residents, and medical students), as well as consulting services across the medical center and the region. The candidate must be detail oriented, well organized, adaptable, and an excellent communicator with willingness and ability to provide continuity across transitions of care. The candidate will have opportunity to participate in quality improvement and clinical research projects, depending on area of interest.

Essential Functions

  • Take patient histories, conduct physical examinations, and record the data in the patient's record; write progress notes and narrative discharge summaries; prepare patient workups and summaries noting pertinent positive and negative findings. Order and schedule laboratory studies and diagnostic procedures; explain the necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of scheduled diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to the patient.
  • Carry out therapeutic wound suturing and dressing changes; monitor progress of patients, report progress to supervising physician, and maintain record of each patient's progress. Participate in basic science and clinical research projects conducted by supervising physician; prepare statistical reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.
  • Participate in teaching medical students, residents, fellows, physician assistant students, nurse practitioner students, and pharmacy students in techniques and procedures which are unique to specific clinical setting. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Master's degree in Nursing and graduation from an ANA approved Nurse Practitioner Program.
  • Current / valid RN and APN license / licenses eligible to practice in the State of Ohio.
  • Three (3) years nursing experience provided that at least two (2) years of it is clinical experience.
  • Graduation from a Physician Assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its predecessor agencies.
  • Certification as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
  • Must be licensed / license eligible in the State of Ohio with prescriptive authority.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience.
  • Additional Qualifications Considered

  • Four (4) years of nursing experience in a critical care setting.
  • ATLS certification or obtained within 6 months of hire.
  • Certification in Adult Acute Care.
  • BLS, ACLS.
  • Demonstrated excellent organization and time management skills and excellent interpersonal skills with patients, families and health care workers.
