- To support better work / life balance, AAGS is looking to hire two part-time spay / neuter surgeons to share a 40-hour work week
Previous employment in animal welfare is a bonus but not required. Qualifications include graduation from an accredited university and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM). Applicants must hold a veterinary license in good standing in New York State. Good communication, strong work ethic and commitment to our Clinic's mission to reduce the unwanted pet overpopulation and promote animal health and safety to the community is required.
- Job Summary :
- Provide comprehensive care for surgical patients and ensure adherence to all pre-, peri-, and post-operative protocols. Train staff and participants in safe, efficient clinic practices while maintaining a professional, supportive environment.
- Key Responsibilities :
- Perform pre-op exams, high-volume sterilizations (training provided), and post-op checks
- Oversee patient care, controlled substance handling, and recovery
- Administer vaccines and recommend follow-up care
- Maintain ethical, safe, and professional veterinary standards
- Evaluate and improve medical protocols with clinic leadership
- Supervise, train, and support clinic staff and volunteers
- Communicate effectively with the Clinic Director, Board, and training program participants
- Participate in special events and ongoing training
- Surgical & Clinical Skills (Training Provided) :
- Proficient in High-Quality, High-Volume Spay / Neuter techniques
- Handle surgical complications and perform CPR / emergency procedures
- Requirements :
- DVM / VMD, licensed (or able to be) in New York State
- DEA license
- Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to manage high-stress, fast-paced environments
- Builds effective relationships through positive interaction and communication with the community, volunteers, and staff
- Performs other duties as needed
- Physical ability to lift 50 lbs., work standing up for extended periods, and handle animals safely
- Emotional resilience and flexibility for variable schedules, including some weekends / holidays
- Preferred Qualifications :
- We value candidates who understand or are eager to learn the High-Quality, High-Volume, Low-Cost (HQHVLCSN) approach to spay / neuter surgery, as it aligns with our mission to increase access to care while maintaining high medical standards.
- Work Environment :
- Busy, high-volume clinic with potential exposure to chemicals, sharps, and anesthetic gases. Must be able to adapt to changing schedules and travel for training as needed.
