Description :

The Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing theory, technical skills, and communication skills in delivering high-quality compassionate care to patients and families.

The RN assesses patient needs and develops a plan of care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.

He / She provides direct care, evaluates patient progress, and coordinates care delivery throughout the patient's episode.

The Med / Surg RN develops specialized skills in the area of cardiac care, including telemetry monitoring.

The RN is accountable for patient and family education to assist in understanding self-care beyond hospitalization.

He / She promotes comfort and provides emotional support in a healing environment.

Nursing knowledge and skills are applied in the delivery of care by assessing patient and family needs through active listening and analyzing data gathered from observations and assessments.

The RN creates an individualized plan of care to address health problems identified, setting goals in collaboration with the patient, family, and health care team members.

The RN adjusts the plan based on patient response or changes in condition.

The RN promotes, advocates for, and protects the health, safety, and rights of the patient.

Quality and effectiveness of nursing practice are systematically evaluated, using results of quality improvement activities to initiate changes.

Self-evaluation of practice is encouraged to identify strengths and areas for professional development.

The RN demonstrates logical reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions or approaches to problems.

Skill is demonstrated in the application of nursing interventions, including medication administration.

Patient and family motivation is achieved by teaching them necessary information to continue care at home.

Learning styles are assessed and sessions structured to maximize understanding.

Teachable moments during care delivery are sought to emphasize pertinent information.

Retention of key points is evaluated through questions.

Tools and information are provided to assist the patient and family after discharge.

Education provided and responses from the patient / family are documented.

Mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members are encouraged to promote collaboration for the best possible patient outcomes.

Teaching others and delegating tasks are conducted consistent with the individual's education, training, and scope of practice.

Compliance with infection prevention strategies is maintained, along with competencies required to care for the specific population assigned.

Potential safety risks and questionable practices are reported.

Leadership awareness is promoted and positive change is fostered.

Rounds are conducted according to protocol, using tools and equipment to keep the patient and family informed, engaged, and safe.
