Motor Vehicle Operator (Materials Handler)

As a Motor Vehicle Operator (Materials Handler), you will be responsible for the following duties :

  • Serves as delivery driver, materials handler, and materials security screener.
  • Routinely receive inbound cargo, screen for undesirable contents using highly efficient, commercial grade X-ray equipment, and provide transportation of materials to host and tenant activities daily.
  • Operates straight in line trucks with airbrakes and truck-trailer combinations with a typical gross vehicle weight of 10,000 up to 32,000 pounds.
  • Assists with loading / unloading materials, using material handling equipment such as electric, gasoline or diesel-powered forklifts rated for 4,000 to 10,000 pounds that can include special attachments.
  • Assures vehicle is not loaded beyond the rated capacity by checking cargo papers and by visual observation.
  • Operates receiving dock to receive and direct trucks to unloading bay.
  • Operate highly efficient, commercial grade security screening (x-ray) equipment to screen and observe all freight, material and mail entering the base.

  • To qualify for a Motor Vehicle Operator (Materials Handler), your resume and supporting documentation must support : Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and that you have the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition.

    Physical Effort Performs work on hard surfaces and in work areas that require standing, stooping, bending, and walking. Work in tiring and uncomfortable positions and may be required to work at a rapid pace for long periods. Exerts moderate to heavy physical effort in the frequent handling of objects weighing over 50 pounds and the occasional handling of heavier objects, which are moved with weight handling equipment or assistance of other workers. May exert moderate to heavy physical effort in climbing on trucks to lower landing gears, cut seals, open container doors, and climb on trailers to load or tie down cargo. Exerts moderate physical effort in operating, turning, backing, and controlling vehicles which carry heavier loads. Work is performed inside or outside in areas that may be hot, damp, cold, drafty, or poorly lighted. Drivers work mostly outside and operate vehicles in all kinds of weather and traffic and are exposed to the danger of serious accidents. They are exposed to dirt, fumes, and to the possibility of cuts, bruises, and broken bones resulting from accidents while driving or from falling objects when loading and unloading the vehicle. Driving is done on and off base in all types of driving conditions. Work may expose individuals to the potential danger of explosives, radiation and biological or chemical contaminants. Work may require wearing personal protective gear such as steel-toed shoes, leather or rubber gloves, aprons, and dust masks.
