We have an exciting opportunity for a  Battery Subject Matter Expert for Space Exploration Application  to join our JETS II contract team at NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX .

If selected you will :

  • Perform and guide engineering efforts to :

Understand the cell chemistry of power potential of novel and high capacity batteries

  • Conducting research and development of novel battery cells
  • Package cells according to the unique needs of multiple NASA programs
  • Producing flight certified battery cells
  • Perform fundamental first principles type modeling of battery cells for use in digital twins and enhanced testing procedures.
  • Battery robustness and lifecycle, including destructive failure testing
  • Understanding thermal runaway scenarios and mitigations
  • Safety verifications in accordance with NASA standards for manned and Criticality 1 spaceflight.
  • Assisting in day-to-day activities including internal NASA JSC task and work package planning, technical evaluations, hardware development and verification, reviewing and providing input related to products and documentation to partners and programs.
  • Work to provide solutions to problems that arise during hardware development and on-orbit operation phases. Assisting in the identification of anomalies and providing engineering recommendations, as required, for resolution of associated issues.
  • Participation in various aspects of integration of the numerous NASA battery systems, including technical reviews, operation plans, review of contractor provided data to close technical requirements, including waivers and exceptions.
  • Provide guidance supporting a broad range of inter-disciplinary - development, design, test, and verification activities, including Program boards, panels, working groups, problem resolution teams, and other technical forums to ensure hardware performance meets all specified requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Support testing and inspection activities at vehicle build site
  • Qualifications :

    This position has been posted at multiple levels. Depending on the candidate's experience, requirements, and business needs, we reserve the right to consider candidates at any level for which this position has been advertised.

  • Typically requires a minimum of a bachelor's degree in Engineering and may be expected to have a related master's or higher degree and normally possess 15+ years of related experience.
  • This position has been posted at the Subject Matter Expert level. Applicants should have multiple years of experience with battery cells and their development, with particular focus on NASA safety around high energy systems.
  • BS degree in Engineering from an accredited engineering school.
  • Minimum of 15 years of engineering analysis experience related to battery or power systems.
  • Expertise with NASA safety design.
  • Expertise with battery cell chemistry
  • Expertise with battery cell testing
  • Experience working with complex, vehicle level models with multiple system interactions
  • Excellent technical writing skills and the ability to use data to draw conclusions and - support the conclusions when challenged.
  • Excellent presentation skills.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills in a team environment.
  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Experience with developing and reviewing electrical models of spacecraft hardware and systems at varying levels of fidelity ranging from detailed, first-principal - models to more descriptive lumped-parameter models.
  • Experience with power systems requirements definition and validation of space flight hardware.
  • Knowledge of programming in one or more of the following : Python, Matlab, Fortran, Thermal Desktop, Aspen
