Maintenance Assistant

The City of La Caada Flintridge invites applications for Maintenance Assistant (Part-Time, Non-Exempt) Sunday through Thursday - up to 32 hours per week (Depending on City needs, there may be the opportunity for a flexible schedule within the specified days).

The City of La Caada Flintridge is inviting applications for the position of Maintenance Assistant. The City of La Caada Flintridge, incorporated in 1976, is home to 20,000 residents, Descanso Gardens, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, five municipal parks, an extensive trails system, and more.

Job Summary

Under general supervision, the Maintenance Assistant performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of City parks, buildings, facilities, and public areas. This part-time, entry-level position provides field and facilities support to ensure clean, safe, and functional public spaces throughout the City of La Caada Flintridge.

This ideal candidate will possess strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills. The ideal candidate will also exhibit the ability to perform duties independently in a thorough, responsible and reliable manner.

Typical duties may include :

  • Assist with routine maintenance, repair, restocking, and cleaning of City buildings, parks, fields, medians, trails, and other City-owned areas.
  • Perform minor carpentry projects including fence repairs, door adjustments, hanging items on walls, or installation of fixtures.
  • Conduct minor plumbing repairs such as clearing drains, replacing fixtures, and inspecting irrigation systems.
  • Complete and submit daily service request logs and maintenance reports.
  • Conduct daily, weekly, and monthly inspections of City facilities and fields, documenting findings and reporting issues.
  • Assist in graffiti removal, basic painting, and general upkeep of public amenities.
  • Operate and maintain small equipment and tools such as blowers, pressure washers, and hand tools.
  • Set up and take down equipment and / or tables and chairs for City-sponsored events and activities.
  • Pick up litter and empty trash bins in public areas.
  • Adhere to safety standards and City policies while performing all work assignments.
  • Assist with emergency and after-hours response activities, as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Desirable Qualifications

Knowledge of :

  • Basic maintenance and repair procedures for buildings, grounds, and equipment.
  • Minor plumbing and carpentry practices.
  • Safe and proper use of hand tools and light equipment.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety procedures.
  • Ability to :

  • Safely and effectively perform maintenance tasks in outdoor and indoor settings.
  • Follow oral and written instructions, work independently, and complete assignments on schedule.
  • Prepare simple reports and service records.
  • Conduct facility inspections and identify maintenance needs.
  • Maintain cooperative relationships with co-workers and members of the public.
  • Learn and apply City rules and procedures related to field operations.
  • Minimum Qualifications

    Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be :

    Education : High school diploma or equivalent is required.

    Experience : One (1) year's experience in building, field, or grounds maintenance is preferred.

    Special Conditions and Licenses

    You must possess mobility to :

  • Work indoors or outdoors, in various weather conditions, which may involve exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, or hazardous conditions.
  • Work early morning, evening, weekend, or holiday shifts, depending on operational needs.
  • Operate a motor vehicle and to visit various City and meeting sites.
  • Frequently stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, reach and operate equipment.
  • Frequently lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects up to 50 pounds.
  • You must possess :

  • Vision to read printed materials and a computer screen.
  • Hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone.
  • Finger dexterity to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator.
  • Licenses and Certifications :

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver's License by time of appointment and a satisfactory driving record.
