Transportation Maintenance Crew Chief

Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Essential Duties
- Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads and put up warning signs and organize response of crews.
- Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.
- Inspects roads while enroute to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors.
- Inspects work performed by maintenance contractors.
- Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.
- Operates light and heavy equipment.
- Oversees the work of designated maintenance inspectors and sign technicians.
- Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment.
- Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting of problems; presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on team members' career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education : High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.
Experience : 5 years' experience in roadway maintenance related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications.
Licenses and Certifications
Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a 'N' endorsement at the time of application.Competencies

Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and / or above 100 degrees for more than one hour.Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device.Medium work : Lift up to 50 pounds at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 pounds.Standing-prolonged periods of time.Talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words.Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication.Close Visual Acuity - work includes data / figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading.Visual Acuity - operate motor vehicles and / or heavy equipment.Visual Acuity - determine work quality / make general observations of facilities / structures.Conditions of Employment
This position requires a pre-employment physical. Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing. Must attend work regularly and observe approved work hours. Required to work weekends and holidays. Must have Class A CDL at the time of application. Required to work hours other than 8 to 5. Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions. Required to wear personal protective equipment. Employee may be contacted during off-duty hours to see if he / she can report to work within 1 hour for emergency situations.
