Correctional Recreation Officer I
A Correctional Recreation Officer I is the entry-level of work providing recreational activities for adult incarcerated persons confined in a correctional facility. This work involves the custody, security, and supervision of incarcerated persons participating in recreational programs. Supervise incarcerated persons to maintain security which may require use of physical intervention; controls movement of incarcerated persons during recreation periods which would total approximately 400-500 inmates each period; supervision and management of inmate detail for sanitation of gym and courtyard, getting out and collecting athletic equipment and setting up courtyard activities; development and scheduling an intramural program of sporting activities within the institution for general population inmates and special needs inmates; coordination of recreation schedule with other departments; searches of inmates; be familiar with and use of security equipment; conduct security rounds; inventory and inspection of security equipment, tools and equipment; responsible for managing a budget including the ordering of exercise equipment, table games, board games and the repair of existing equipment, including pool tables, gym equipment, etc. for entire institution; responding to and / or reporting unusual or irregular incidents to supervisory writing matters of record as necessary; verbally counsel inmates and initiate progressive discipline; breaking up fights between incarcerated persons which includes chasing, tackling and / or subduing fleeing prisoners, or dragging immobile persons. This may involve using hands or feet in self-defense or discharging chemical agents; administers basic first responder first aid as necessary including cardiopulmonary and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation; comply with assigned post orders and specific institutional directives relevant to assignment.
