Communications Director
Under administrative direction, is responsible for strategic communications planning and implementation of projects and initiatives for the Office of the Mayor. Works with City officials and staff at all levels in the coordination of media and community relations programs and activities. Working conditions are primarily inside an office environment. Exercises direct supervision over assigned staff. This position is an "unclassified" position and has no disciplinary appeal rights to the Municipal Civil Service Commission. This position is likewise subject to at-will employment status and can be terminated at any time for any reason. Work Location City Hall - 100 Military Plaza, San Antonio, TX (78205) Work Hours 7 : 45 a.m. - 4 : 30 p.m., Monday - Friday; Additional hours may be required, depending on business needs.
Essential Job Functions
- Develops and implements the communication strategy for the Mayor's Office.
- Manages the development and release of communications content from the Mayor's Office.
- Develops media advisories, news releases, and requests for news coverage.
- Enhances media relations and community engagement on behalf of the Mayor's Office by working with various City staff to accurately and efficiently respond to media inquiries.
- Prepares the Mayor for presentations, speeches, and official appearances.
- Assists in the support of a variety of boards and commissions, serving as a representative of the Mayor's Office on special projects, committees, and task forces.
- Consults with officials and staff to develop effective and engaging communications programs, to include the development of social media strategies that support the Mayor's Office.
- Writes and edits communication materials, including speeches, scripts, talking points, and formal correspondence for the Mayor.
- May maintain calendar of activities, meetings, and various events for the Mayor; coordinates activities with City departments, the public, and outside agencies.
- Attends special events and activities as required.
- Supervises and provides direction to assigned staff, to include but not limited to delegating work and evaluating performance.
- Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.
Job Requirements
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Master's degree highly preferred.Five (5) years of experience in Communications, Marketing, Public Information or a related field, including two (2) years of direct supervisory experience.Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
