Job description

Job Summary :

The Injury Prevention and Outreach Coordinator (IPOC) is responsible for the planning, development, and implementation of the Injury Prevention Program for Forrest General Hospital. The IPOC will report directly to the Director of Trauma Services.

The objectives of the Injury Prevention program are :

(1) To educate the community about injury prevention strategies and indirectly decrease death and injury by improving patient awareness within the trauma district;

(2) To coordinate trauma outreach projects and courses as directed by the Director of Trauma Service

(3) To raise the visibility of the Trauma Center through community engagement and public awareness by generating positive media coverage through community outreach.

(4) To coordinate mental health initiatives and screening, brief intervention, referral, and treatment of alcohol misuse (SBIRT) for trauma patients

(5) To provide in-house therapy support for complex trauma survivors requiring prolonged hospitalization

  • The IPOC will conduct community education programs and serve as a resource to staff and patients related to trauma care and injury prevention education. The IPOC will analyze trauma data from the trauma registry to determine trended mechanisms of injury, injury severity, and contributing factors in efforts to target at risk populations. Examples of focus may be motor vehicle occupant safety, child passenger safety seat education, distracted driving, motorcycle safety, bicycle safety, helmet initiatives, pedestrian safety, fall prevention, firearms injury prevention programs, violence intervention and screening programs. He / She will participate in or coordinate at least one community event per quarter.
  • The IPOC will monitor screening for non-accidental trauma (child abuse), alcohol misuse, and mental health issues for trauma patients. He / She will provide in-house therapy support for complex trauma survivors requiring prolonged hospitalization.
  • The IPOC will coordinate and lead the trauma survivor’s group and coordinate Project INSPIRE. Other projects may be assigned as needed.
  • The IPOC will work with marketing professionals to develop and maintain a public presence for the prevention program. He / She will act as a spokesperson for injury and trauma prevention issues and will partner with local print and broadcast media in preparation to service to the community by providing injury prevention information. The IPOC will leverage partnerships with other trauma centers, pre-hospital organizations, public health and violence prevention organizations, law enforcement agencies, schools, churches, and others interested in community injury prevention efforts.
  • The IPOC will identify, pursue, and obtain sources of program support and / or grant funding as needed. The IPOC will advocate for injury prevention efforts with elected and appointed leaders by attending Trauma Day at the Capitol once per year.
  • Other duties may be assigned by the Trauma Program Director.

Performance Expectations :

The Injury Prevention Coordinator (IPC)

1. Must be knowledgeable about the epidemiology of injury, including health burden, risk factors, and disparities in care for trauma patients.

2. Will develop, oversee, and evaluate the effectiveness of community injury prevention.

3. Must be knowledgeable of current best practice recommendations for trauma care and prevention of injury.

4. Must be efficient in basic graphic design principles and desktop publishing techniques, and Microsoft Office software.

5. Must have strong organizational and planning skills with the ability to work independently and with diverse groups and teams.

7. Will maintain documentation highlighting injury mechanism trends and community events.

9. Report injury prevention activities at the multidisciplinary Trauma Council meetings including activity name, date, participation data, and evaluation of outcomes.

Education / Skills :

  • Licensed Clinical Therapist (LIC) or Licensed Clinical Social Worker with certification in therapy required.
  • Must be knowledgeable about traumatic injury and injury prevention.
  • Must have strong public speaking and community engagement skills.
  • Work Experience :

  • Minimum 2 years experience healthcare related field preferred.
  • Mental Demands :

    1. Must be knowledgeable of public relations techniques

    2. Must have strong media relations skills and high comfort level with public speaking.

    3. Must have effective time management skills and be self-driven to complete tasks.

    4. Must be able to adapt program development, assessment, and implementation based on demographics and risk factor differences.

    5. Must be able to use logic and critical thinking to plan intervention and implementation strategies.
