Family Law Managing Attorney - Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York (Plattsburgh or Canton Office)

The Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York seeks an exceptional Family Law Managing Attorney to lead our mission-critical work protecting families, children, and individuals facing their most challenging legal battles. YOUR LEADERSHIP MISSION

As our Family Law Managing Attorney , you will serve as both a legal strategist and inspirational leader, overseeing comprehensive family law services while managing multi-office operations. You'll guide a talented team of attorneys, paralegals, and support staff in delivering exceptional legal representation to clients facing domestic violence, custody disputes, divorce proceedings, and other critical family law matters.

ESSENTIAL LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Operations Management

Direct day-to-day operations of office locations and specialized legal practice areas

Supervise and mentor attorneys, paralegals, law clerks, client services coordinators, and case handlers across multiple regional offices

  • Collaborate with executive leadership to ensure program excellence, grant compliance, and strategic goal achievement
  • Maintain the highest professional standards while adhering to program requirements and funder expectations

Legal Excellence & Community Impact

  • Lead strategic community engagement and education initiatives with stakeholders and community groups
  • Spearhead outreach efforts that expand access to justice for underserved populations
  • Guide professional development of staff through CLE presentations and specialized training
  • Serve as a resource for LASNNY staff and broader access to justice community
  • Team Leadership & Development

  • Foster collaborative relationships across all program areas and regional offices
  • Champion staff growth through mentorship, training, and professional development opportunities
  • Build and maintain partnerships that enhance service delivery and community impact
  • Required Qualifications

  • New York State Bar membership in good standing or eligibility for admission on motion
  • Minimum 7 years legal experience with substantial litigation background
  • Demonstrated expertise in family law, eviction defense, foreclosure defense, bankruptcy, consumer rights, government benefits, or disability advocacy
  • Exceptional administrative capabilities and proven leadership skills
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication abilities
  • Flexibility for travel and evening / weekend work as needed
  • Valid NYS Driver's License and reliable transportation
  • Preferred Experience That Sets You Apart

  • Legal supervision experience with proven success in team management
  • Deep commitment to serving low-income communities through legal services or similar public interest work
  • 5+ years civil law practice experience with complex case management
  • 3+ years specialized experience in family law, housing, or government benefits
  • Management experience supervising diverse legal teams including law clerks and support staff
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft 365 suite (Outlook, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Bilingual capabilities (Spanish preferred)

  • Masterful organizational abilities with exceptional multitasking, prioritization, and deadline management skills
  • Superior legal writing expertise across all formats : motions, appeals, memoranda, reports, and correspondence
  • Extensive courtroom experience including client interviews, depositions, hearings, trials, and appellate work
  • Adaptive leadership style that effectively responds to staff, client, and organizational needs
  • Strong collaborative mindset balanced with independent decision-making capabilities
