Job Description

3616 JOB DESCRIPTION

Under supervision, and in accordance with well-defined policies and procedures, performs various routine phases of technical library work and related duties. Responsibilities include following established methods, making routine contacts with the general public, and preparing and maintaining files and records.

Important and Essential Duties

According to Civil Service Commission Rule 109, duties below are representative of the range of duties for this job and are not inclusive :

  • Process orders, overdue accounts, library card applications, requests for library material, new books, additional copies, serials, documents, and other library material.
  • Charge and discharge library material.
  • Assist patrons in person, by telephone, and by correspondence regarding library policies and procedures; assist with routine questions and locating materials under supervision.
  • Search for library materials; obtain information from bibliographies, files, records and other sources.
  • Do preliminary cataloging; make proper entry of new serials; assign Cutter numbers.
  • File; maintain files and records; write routine correspondence; type; handle money; sort books for delivery, discard, or bindery.
  • Assist in opening / closing the branch or department; inventory the collection; check shelves for placement and needed repairs.
  • Instruct clerical and supportive staff and may supervise them.
  • Collaborate in creating, preparing, and displaying reference materials and resources.
  • Assist in preparing exhibits or publicity materials; may drive bookmobile and assist patrons.
  • May create, maintain, and troubleshoot technical issues related to the Library’s website, intranet, and other electronic media systems; handle audio, video, images, and graphics.
  • May lead and provide technical training to other Library staff.
  • Supervision Received / Exercised : Receives supervision from a Librarian and / or Library Technical Assistant II and may act as a lead worker over subordinate library personnel.

    Qualifications

    Minimum qualifications include one of the following :

  • An Associate’s degree with a major in Library Information Technology; OR
  • Completion of a Library Information Technology certificate program plus one year of full-time verifiable library work experience in technical services, circulation, cataloging, or information services (equivalent to duties of class 3610 Library Assistant) in San Francisco; OR
  • Two years of full-time verifiable library work experience in the relevant areas (equivalent to duties of class 3610 Library Assistant) in San Francisco.
  • Special Conditions : Some positions may require bilingual skills; a language proficiency test may be administered; some positions may require lifting up to 50 pounds with assistance; some positions may require a valid California Driver’s License.

    Selection Procedures

    Application and Preliminary Questionnaire : Complete thoroughly to avoid disqualification. Candidates meeting minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in assessments measuring knowledge, skills, and abilities relevant to the class.

    Library Technical Assistant Examination Core Examination (Weight : 100%) : A written multiple-choice exam assessing knowledge in library procedures, databases, office procedures, and related areas, plus abilities in supervision, communication, attention to detail, and problem solving. Exams are computer-based. Scoring follows Civil Service rules. Passing the Core examination is required to be placed on the eligible list. The department may conduct additional position-specific procedures.
