Parks Maintenance Worker
Performs a variety of semi-skilled and unskilled manual labor tasks in the maintenance of parks, ball fields, and recreational facilities. An employee in this class performs a variety of semi-skilled, manual labor tasks related to the construction, maintenance and repair of parks and recreational facilities. Work may include performing various horticultural practices, performing maintenance tasks on parks and recreation facilities, mowing, trimming and operating equipment. Work subjects the employee to inside and outside environmental conditions and hazards. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Parks and Recreation Maintenance Supervisor. This is a generic class specification and may not describe all of the duties specific to each position. An employee may be assigned to ball field crews or general maintenance crews. Essential Functions
Essential duties and tasks include : performing a variety of maintenance tasks such as mowing grass and preparing ball fields for play; repairing fences and gates; removing leaves, debris, and snow from facilities. Performing general maintenance tasks on public recreational complexes, playground equipment, fences and gates and tennis courts. Performing some carpentry, plumbing, and minor electrical work related to recreational facilities. Pruning and weed eating. Applying mulch. Spraying and applying pesticides. Performing landscaping duties such as planting grass, building planting beds, applying fertilizer, etc. Cleaning bathrooms and getting up trash at recreational facilities. Operating all equipment necessary to complete assigned tasks such as trucks, tractors, hand tools, and mowing machines. Dragging, setting pitching rubber, installing bases, repairing fields and painting lines on ball fields. Mowing grass, trimming shrubbery, clearing and landscaping other municipal property. Determining equipment and materials needed on job sites. Setting up and taking down for special events. Performing routine maintenance on equipment used. Driving crew and construction vehicles. May lead a crew of permanent, temporary, or seasonal workers on a project and instruct personnel regarding tasks to be performed and equipment safety. Works on weekends for tournaments and special events. Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Considerable knowledge of the landscaping trade, specifically related to recreation field maintenance. General knowledge of work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned areas of work. Working knowledge of the building trades of electrical, plumbing, and carpentry. Working knowledge of horticultural practices. Ability to perform heavy manual work over long periods of time. Ability to work outside in various environmental conditions. Ability to operate the equipment. Ability to understand and follow oral instructions. Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school with some experience working in landscape maintenance or construction. Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license. Pesticide license, preferred.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and / or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must possess the visual acuity to perform labor tasks, operate equipment and motor vehicles, inspect the work performed, and review work for accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness.
