Job description

Community Engagement Manager

The Community Engagement Manager (CEM) leads the direction of community-engaged teaching and practice within the Environmental Studies Program and its affiliates. The CEM co-directs our flagship community-engaged course and works closely with internal and external partners to create and facilitate community-engaged interdisciplinary environmental initiatives. The CEM oversees our contingent of internal and externally placed student interns and serves as a central hub for community engagement by connecting faculty members with local public and private sector organizations and governments. The CEM builds and manages these external partnerships as well as stimulating and supporting interdisciplinary, community engaged work. The CEM evaluates the success of the above initiatives in meeting key programmatic outcomes, most importantly student learning.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities :

  • Co-directing the Sustainability Exchange, a community-engaged, project-based, capstone practicum course offered every semester that brings students, faculty, and community partners together to tackle pressing environmental challenges.
  • Leading instructional design, assessment, and evaluation for the course.
  • Leading key instruction in the course, including content on entering & exiting communities, group dynamics, and project management.
  • Managing application processes for sustainability project proposals.
  • Leading project development processes by connecting community partners with relevant faculty members and supporting development of project plans.
  • Providing students, faculty, and community partners with consistent feedback on project work.
  • Problem-solving challenges with all stakeholders.
  • Managing budget for the course.
  • Co-supervising teaching assistants / instructional assistants.
  • Managing communication to attract students, faculty, and community partners to participate in the course.

Leading our student- and faculty-facing partnership-driven programs.

  • Managing the Impact Internship Program, including sourcing internship opportunities, managing student application processes, leading student growth & development, and working with HR.
  • Regularly engaging with existing community partners to assess the effectiveness of the internship program.
  • Building new relationships with community organizations to serve the St. Louis community and provide additional opportunities for students.
  • Leading the vision, strategy, visibility, and buy-in of environmental community engagement work as a strategy for meeting EnSt student learning outcomes.

  • Assisting faculty in adding community engaged components to their course offerings.
  • Identifying community engagement strategies that most enhance student learning outcomes.
  • Creating synergy with other offices, programs, departments, and schools.
  • Evaluating the success of our strategies with program evaluation tools.
  • Facilitating Collaborations & Partnerships

  • Leading events and workshops to facilitate interdisciplinary on- and off-campus collaboration.
  • Stewarding existing partnerships & cultivating new partnerships.
  • Developing relationships with faculty & staff across campus.
  • Supporting course development and program logistics to bring partnership ideas to fruition.
  • Communications & Administration

  • Tracking & reporting outcomes of community-engaged work.
  • Managing budget for community-engaged work.
  • Managing relevant social media accounts, newsletters, and web presence.
  • Communicating our work with on- and off-campus communications outlets.
  • Representing the program at community engaged conferences.
  • Working Conditions / Equipment / Schedule :

    Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends; ability to travel throughout the St. Louis area.

    Required Qualifications :

    Education : Bachelor's degree or combination of education and / or experience may substitute for minimum education.

    Certifications : No specific certification is required for this position.

    Salary Range : Base pay is commensurate with experience. The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
