As the flagship hospital of eastern North Carolinas premier healthcare system, this facility offers a full spectrum of inpatient and outpatient care and houses the region's only Level I trauma center. Serving as the teaching hospital for a major universitys school of medicine, this 861-bed hospital has received accreditation from The Joint Commission and the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) and certification as a Primary Stroke Center, as well as the Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Gold Plus award from the American Stroke Association and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Medal of Honor for Organ Donation.
