We are seeking a Principal Data Scientist to guide the strategic decisions and the development of reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. Our goal is to create safe AI solutions that will revolutionize and improve healthcare experience and outcomes for our customers. Join our rapidly expanding team of dedicated data scientists, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders as we work together to build impactful and beneficial AI systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • AI Innovation & Responsible Generative AI Design – AI solutions using Python, computer vision, and generative models like LLMs and diffusion models. Ensure responsible development aligned with Humana's ethical standards, focusing on transparency, safety, and real‑world impact.
  • Agentic AI System Design – Build autonomous AI agents using frameworks (i.e. LangChain, LangGraph, AutoGen, CrewAI) to support reasoning and decision‐making in healthcare.
  • Enterprise Integration & Business Collaboration – Embed AI into Humana's systems and workflows. Partner with business teams to understand challenges, co‑create solutions, and communicate AI capabilities clearly—especially around generative AI. Design for scalability, reliability, and compliance.
  • MLOps & DevOps Collaboration – Work with engineering and product teams to implement best practices for deploying and maintaining AI models in production.
  • Develop, maintain, and collect structured and unstructured datasets for analysis and reporting.
  • Create reports, projections, models, and presentations to support business strategy and tactics.
  • Work with senior executives to develop and drive segment or enterprise‑wide functional strategies.
  • Advise one or more areas, programs or functions and provide recommendations to senior executives on matters of significance, acting as an advanced subject‑matter expert competent to work at very high levels in multiple knowledge and functional areas across the enterprise.

Required Qualifications

  • Educational Background – Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Data Science, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field.
  • Experience – Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in data science. 5+ years specifically focused on AI and NLP applications.
  • Technical Skills – Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or R, with extensive experience in NLP libraries (e.g., NTLK, spaCy, Hugging Face Transformers) and frameworks like TensorFlow or PyTorch for model development.
  • Analytical Expertise – Demonstrated ability to process and analyze large textual datasets, extracting meaningful insights, building predictive models, and using generative AI techniques.
  • Communication Skills – Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with a proven ability to articulate complex concepts in a clear and concise manner to diverse audiences, including non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Problem‑Solving Skills – Strong analytical and critical thinking abilities, with a track record of delivering data‑driven solutions in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Industry Knowledge – Familiarity with the healthcare sector, specifically Medicare Advantage, and an understanding of regulatory frameworks and market dynamics.
  • Advanced Technical Skills – Experience with cloud‑based AI solutions (e.g., AWS, Azure) and familiarity with data visualization tools such as Tableau or Power BI for presenting findings.
  • Leadership Experience – Proven experience in a leadership capacity, mentoring junior data scientists and managing cross‑functional projects that leverage generative AI and NLP.
  • Research Contributions – Publications in reputable journals or conferences related to AI, NLP, or machine learning, demonstrating thought leadership in the field.
  • Certifications – Relevant certifications in machine learning or NLP, such as those offered by recognized institutions or organizations (e.g., TensorFlow Developer Certificate, NLP Specialization by deeplearning.ai).
  • 3–5 years project and / or people leadership experience.

    Work at Home Guidance

    To ensure Home or Hybrid Home / Office associates' ability to work effectively, the self‑provided internet service of Home or Hybrid Home / Office associates must meet the following criteria : at minimum, a download speed of 25 Mbps and an upload speed of 10 Mbps is recommended; wireless, wired cable or DSL connection is suggested. Satellite, cellular and microwave connection can be used only if approved by leadership. Associates who live and work from Home in the state of California, Illinois, Montana, or South Dakota will be provided a bi‑weekly payment for their internet expense. Humana will provide Home or Hybrid Home / Office associates with telephone equipment appropriate to meet the business requirements for their position / job. Work from a dedicated space lacking ongoing interruptions to protect member PHI / HIPAA information.

    $156,600 – $215,400 per year

    This job is eligible for a bonus incentive plan. This incentive opportunity is based upon company and / or individual performance.
