We are currently seeking a Health Information Coder to join our Health Information Management team. In this role, you’ll convert diagnoses and treatment procedure verbiage into numerical codes using an approved disease and operation classification system. For many third-party payers—particularly for the majority of patients—these codes determine the amount the hospital is reimbursed for a patient’s stay.
As a Health Information Coder, you’ll play a vital role in ensuring accuracy and compliance in coding processes, directly impacting hospital operations and reimbursement. This position reports to the Director of Health Information Management and is an hourly, non-exempt position.
Key responsibilities include :
Converting diagnoses and procedures into approved numerical codes
Applying proper code selection and sequencing for reimbursement
Ensuring accurate coded diagnostic information for long-range planning
Maintaining compliance with applicable coding guidelines and standards
Collaborating with healthcare providers to clarify documentation as needed
QUALIFICATIONS
Education :
Prefer minimum of two years of college or vocational training, preferably in Health Information Management.
Education should include specialized technical healthcare subjects such as medical terminology, pathology, anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology.

Knowledge & Skills :
Strong skills in proper code selection and sequencing of diagnoses and procedures
Understanding of reimbursement processes and compliance requirements
Attention to detail and analytical thinking
Proficiency in coded diagnostic information for planning and reporting
Licensure, Registration or Certification :
Prefer an individual who has successfully passed a national certifying examination to be designated as a :
Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), or
Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), or
Certified Coding Specialist (CCS or CPC), or is preparing to complete certification.
If not certified, candidates must have a minimum of 5 years of coding experience without certification.
