About the Role
The Company is seeking a Vice President for Legal and Government Affairs / General Counsel to serve as its Chief Legal Officer. The successful candidate will provide expert legal counsel to the President, Board of Trustees, senior leadership, and other stakeholders, overseeing all legal aspects of the institution's operations. This includes ensuring compliance with laws and regulations, managing legal risks, and representing the institution in legal matters. The role is also pivotal in policy development, governance, and strategic initiatives, and involves managing a wide range of complex legislative and issue-oriented interactions. The Vice President and General Counsel will be responsible for legal compliance, risk management, and will play a key role in the development of contracts and agreements.
Applicants must have a Juris Doctor degree and be a licensed member of the Massachusetts bar, or have the qualifications to be admitted to the MA bar. Substantial experience in public higher education law, a strong understanding of legal, political, and regulatory issues in this sector, and a proven track record of effective communication and interpersonal skills are essential. The role requires a candidate with demonstrable knowledge of higher education principles and practices, experience in negotiating procurement contracts, and working within collective bargaining agreements.
