Job Summary

The City of Beverly Hills is offering $20,000 signing bonus for qualified lateral police officers. Lateral police officers must have a minimum of one year of satisfactory full-time employment as a sworn officer in a municipal, county or state police department within the state of California. Possession of a valid California Basic P.O.S.T. certificate is required. Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications for police officer but do not possess one year of satisfactory full-time employment as a sworn officer in a municipal, county or state police department within the state of California, will receive a $15,000 signing bonus.

What we're looking for : The City of Beverly Hills Police Department is seeking highly motivated and qualified candidates for the position of lateral police officer. The lateral police officer performs duties to protect life and property within the city. Maintains law and order and respond to emergency calls. May patrol the city enforcing the criminal and traffic laws of the city, state and nation. Performs background investigations, or perform training duties.

Distinguishing characteristics : This is the full working class in law enforcement. Incumbents appointed to this class will have related work experience and will possess law enforcement training. Initially, incumbents will be assigned to patrol and work under close supervision, performing the more routine duties assigned to positions in this class. However, as experience is gained, incumbents are expected to perform the full range of duties as assigned with increasing independence. Special assignments in police-related functions (within or outside of patrol) may be available to experienced incumbents, depending on the needs of the department. Appointment to a special assignment is at the discretion of the Police Chief.

Supervision received and exercised : Receives technical supervision from a police sergeant or higher level sworn classification. May provide technical supervision to non-sworn personnel.

The selection process may consist of the following components :

  • Application review : Please attach all education, trainings, courses, and / or certificates required as part of the minimum qualifications to your application.
  • Assessment of supplemental questionnaire : Respond in full to all supplemental questions.
  • Performance exam : Candidates who are successful on the written exam will participate in a physical agility test (PAT) held at Rio Hondo Community College.
  • Oral interviews : Candidates who pass the PAT will be invited to the oral interview.

Disaster service workers : All City of Beverly Hills employees are designated disaster service workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all disaster service worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.

Major Duties

Examples of essential duties :

  • Patrol assigned areas of the city by car, motorcycle, bicycle, or on foot to preserve law and order, discover and prevent commission of crimes, and to enforce traffic, criminal, and other laws and ordinances.
  • Respond to calls for the protection of life and property, the enforcement of traffic, criminal and other laws and ordinances.
  • Conduct initial and follow-up investigations at scenes of incidents to which summoned or incidents observed.
  • Prepare and serve search and arrest warrants; apprehend and arrest offenders for crimes committed under federal, state, and local laws and codes.
  • Direct traffic at fires, special events, and other emergency situations.
  • Serve as a liaison and public relations officer for the assigned area.
  • Contact and cooperate with other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to the apprehension of offenders and the investigation of offenses.
  • Perform a variety of administrative and other types of duties in support of law enforcement services, programs, and activities.
  • Prepare a variety of reports including those on shift activities, operations, crime and incidents, arrests made, and unusual incidents observed.
  • Testify in juvenile, civil, traffic, municipal, and criminal courts, and parole and DMV hearings.
  • Assume responsibility for the care and custody of detained adults and juveniles.
  • Conduct property and building checks for burglary and other criminal activity.
  • Administer CPR, NARCAN, and first aid in cases of medical emergencies.
  • Conduct chemical, drug, and alcohol testing of persons for impairment.
  • Respond to questions, concerns, and requests for service from the general public.
  • Develop and maintain positive relations with residents, business owners, schools, and other members of the community.
  • Stay abreast of changes in the department's policy and procedures manual.
  • Participate in continuous training to develop, maintain, and enhance law enforcement skills.
  • Depending on departmental needs, may serve in a special assignment.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Minimum Qualifications

    Experience and training : Experience specified in one of the tracks listed below :

  • Track 1 : Graduation from an accredited California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) academy and currently employed in good standing with a California law enforcement agency as a sworn police officer. Receipt of the POST Basic certificate is required on or before the completion of the first year of employment as a sworn police officer.
  • Track 2 : Employed as a sworn police officer within the last three years and eligible for re-hire. Possession of the POST Basic certificate.
  • Out-of-state officers must complete the POST Basic Course waiver process prior to application.
  • Training specified in one of the tracks listed below :
  • Track 1 : At least 36 semester units (or 54 quarter units) from an accredited college or university at the time of application. Must provide a diploma, official or unofficial transcripts at time of application.
  • Track 2 : A minimum of four years of active duty in the U.S. Armed Services (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard) after an Honorable Discharge. (Must provide Form DD214 at time of application.)
  • License and certificate : Possession of a valid California driver's license and satisfactory driving record. Possession of Penal Code 832 Arrest and Firearms Training certificate. Possession of, or ability to obtain, Basic Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certificate upon completion of probation. Must meet any other criteria mandated by the California Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission (POST).

    Other requirements : Must be a citizen of the United States of America, or a lawful permanent resident, at the time of application. Must be 21 years of age at the time of appointment. Must be able to meet physical standards. Must meet psychological and background standards that reflect the following :

  • Must be found to be free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition, including bias against race or ethnicity, gender, nationality, religion, disability, or sexual orientation that might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer.
  • Must be of good moral character, as determined by a thorough background investigation.
  • Must be able to maintain required P.O.S.T. certification and maintain firearms qualification.
  • Must be willing to work irregular hours including days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and over-time as needed.
  • Must be available for call-back and automatic return to work with a reasonable response time (within the amount of time as if traveling from residence) during off-duty hours for major emergencies, disasters, critical incidents, and as otherwise required.
