PWR Fuel Engineer
Southern Nuclear Operating Company's corporate Nuclear Fuel and Analysis Department, PWR Fuel Engineering, provides support and performance in the fuel and reactor engineering functional area for the PWR Southern Nuclear Fleet. We are seeking experienced engineers interested in supporting our efforts to advance industry leading nuclear fuel initiatives and continuing to support the operations of our PWR nuclear fleet. These positions report to the PWR Fuel Engineering manager at the SNC Corporate Office in Birmingham, AL, and will require up to approximately 25% travel.
Job Duties and Responsibilities : This position is responsible for performing activities related to nuclear fuel and core design, core management, operational support, reload safety analysis, reload licensing, and technical evaluations regarding nuclear fuel vendor fabrication and design capabilities for current and advanced fuel products. This position is also responsible for spent fuel characterization and certification for long term dry storage. Work performed in this position supports six operating PWR units. This position may be required to support the fleet Emergency Response Organization.
Education Requirements : Bachelor of Science degree in Nuclear Engineering from an ABET accredited college or university. Nuclear Engineering degree is preferred; OR Advanced degree in Nuclear Engineering with an accredited Bachelor of Science in another engineering field. PE License and / or other specialty certifications, such as a Qualified Reactor Engineer, are preferred.
Background / Experience Requirements : Senior Engineer : Minimum of 5 years of experience in the nuclear industry. Previous work experience in PWR fuel engineering is required. Must be able to make independent decisions, assess risk and consequences with minimal management oversight. Ability to lead, coordinate, and facilitate technical meetings with confidence and understanding in PWR nuclear fuels. Principal / Lead Engineer : Minimum of 8 years of work experience in engineering in the nuclear industry. Previous work experience in PWR fuel engineering is required. Must be able to work independently to resolve complex technical issues regarding PWR fuel engineering. Must possess extensive knowledge that enables them to lead and participate in PWR fuel professional committees.
