Bargaining Unit : IFPTE

Employment Type : 40 hours per week (Full-time)

Internal salary : Range 11 ($40,661.17 - $58,528.87)

External salary : Range 11 ($40,661.17 - $46,021.48)

UNION POSITIONS :   The internal salary range is used for applicants who are current NJ state employees with underlying classified status for promotional calculations who meet the requirements below. The external salary range is used for candidates who are not NJ state employees who meet the requirements below.

Position Overview :

The Department of Facilities and Administrative Services is a large operational service organization that provides a broad array of services  to the campus community through the following offices : Access Control Services, Automotive Services, Building Services, Campus Space Management Services, Energy and Central Utilities, Facilities Operations, Grounds and Landscape Maintenance Services, Mailing and Receiving Services, Occupational Safety and Environmental Services and Risk Management Services. This position resides within the Plumbing Shop in the Department of Facilities Operations.

Responsibilities :

Under the direction of the Supervisor of the Plumbing Shop, performs varied types of plumbing repair work involving the installation, repair, adjustment and maintenance of plumbing and steam fitting fixtures, fittings, and systems; does other related work as required.

Assists with preventive maintenance to all plumbing related systems and equipment in a safe manner.  Replaces parts as required; lubricates parts as needed; and, cleans and adjusts components as necessary.  Reports all deficiencies to supervisor.

Assists with replacing fixtures / parts as required; oils, greases, lubricates fixtures / parts as needed; and, cleans and adjusts components as necessary. Make emergency plumbing repairs. Reports all observed repair needs to supervisor in a timely fashion.  Will be required to learn to utilize various types of plumbing and / or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Receives work orders from supervisor, which outline the work to be done, in what time frame and methods to be used in order to accomplish the job according to specific instruction; maintains accurate records of equipment used, work done and time spent.

Maintain and repair water, drainage, waste, and gas lines; toilets, wash basins, showers, bath tubs and urinals; appliances and machinery; and installs, maintains, and tests pumps.

Obtains, stores, safeguards, and properly uses equipment, materials, supplies, and tools.  Keeps records or work done, materials used, and time spent

Maintains accurate records of work assignments, problem resolution, equipment, and hours using hard copy and computer equipment.

Maintains all tools, equipment and motor vehicles.  Schedules and maintenance and cleans and washes motor vehicles as required.

Other duties as assigned

Qualifications :

  • Knowledgeable of the methods and problems involved in repairing and maintaining water, drainage, waste and gas lines, radiators, toilets, wash basins, urinals, showers, bath tubs, and other types of plumbing and steam fitting equipment and / or systems.
  • Ability to inspect, install, repair all types of plumbing and steam fitting equipment and / or systems, including fittings, fixtures, appliances and machinery under varying circumstances.
  • Works from prioritized Work Orders as issued by Supervisor.  Record remediation on Work Order ticket, date completed, tools, and materials used. Inform supervisor when Work Orders are complete.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with supervisor, colleagues and clients.

Required :

  • Maintains a positive relationship with members of the college community.  Works as a team member with college staff to resolve maintenance related problems. Renders courteous service to all clients.
  • Comply with college occupational, health safety, and security and environmental regulations and procedures.
  • Projects a professional image, wearing the appropriate uniform at and College ID badge all times.
  • Ensures that all work areas and shop area are clean and clear of debris and equipment.  Ensures that cleanup is completed prior to the end of the workday and / or job assignment.
  • Complies with all safety regulations.  Attends all safety training classes.
  • Under general supervision, works independently in all aspects of work in job description, including the processing of prioritized work orders.   Apprises supervisor of any issues where approval is required and / or when there is an issue that cannot easily be resolved.
  • This position has no supervisory responsibility.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent. One year experience in the repair of all types of plumbing fixtures, systems and equipment; Possession of valid driver’s license in good standing issued by state of residence is required.
  • Works in non-air conditioned spaces such as outdoors, roofs, mechanical rooms, penthouses, attics, and buildings.
  • Must work outdoors during inclement weather, such as in rain, snow, cold and hot weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work efficiently in a busy, fast paced environment.
