Job Summary

Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, the Mental Health Worker (MHW) assists professional and technical personnel in the observation of patients, some of whom may require continuous, intermittent or video observation. The goal of observation is to prevent harm to the patient, staff, and to reassure patient safety and prevent any harm that may result in a negative medical outcome.

MHWs may assist the Registered Nurse with routine patient care such as feeding, hygiene needs, as well as organizing activities and interactive therapy sessions with continuous observation of patients. MHWs also help to ensure that a calm, safe setting is maintained while gaining insight into treatment options for patients and participating in patient's treatment planning with nursing staff and doctors. MHWs will perform the duties of re-stocking the department.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and / or certification if required of the position

  • De-escalation / behavioral health training, MAB Certification, or CPI Certification relevant training or experience
  • American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS), or UC Davis Health CPR
  • No Minimum Education Required
  • One (1) year experience in an inpatient hospital setting.
  • Ability to read and write in English language.
  • Ability to use a computer, keyboard, and / or mouse to appropriately utilize healthcare systems for documentation, communication, training / education and completion of schedule / time card.
  • Oral communication skills to effectively deal with patients, visitors, patients and staff.
  • Ability to maintain courteous, tactful relationships with visitors, patients and clinicians.
  • Ability to adjust workload under changing conditions, and remains confidential with all patient information.
  • Incumbent must complete Crisis Intervention Training within 3 months of hire and is required to complete training on an annual basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Performs routine duties which do not require special skills or training.
  • In addition, performs tasks requiring special skills or training acquired through formal or on the job training but which do not require special licensure.

    The Emergency Department at UC Davis Medical Center provide care to adult and pediatric patients with a variety of emergent (medical surgical, critical care, emergent, perioperative) needs. Patient conditions include : acute, chronic medical / surgical, trauma, critical or behavioral health.

    Work variable shifts / hours (day, night or weekends shifts and holidays), 12 hour shifts. PD MHW to work at least 3 shifts on a day or night shift with 2 weekends shifts in each 4 week schedule and work at least 2-4 holidays per calendar year.
