Summary of Work
As a Transition / Life Skills Specialist, you will work with students and adults in a team setting providing instruction at the School for the Blind as well as periodic work in communities across the state.
During training weeks for different age groups, you will assist with instruction in various life skills (activities of daily living, i.e.) for those with low vision or blindness. Building career readiness concepts and skills with students will be a major aspect of daily work. Developing relationships with employers and assisting students with scheduled job experiences in those settings is a key responsibility. Some travel within the state to visit student in schools and employment settings is an expectation.
To thrive in this position, you must be willing to enthusiastically learn the resources and skills to enable independence for students with low vision or blindness. Structured, on-the-job training will be provided and participation in blindness-related coursework may be required. We are looking for someone who enjoys teaching and role-modeling, is passionate about empowering others, and is a team player.
Minimum Qualifications
An associated degree or greater in a medical field (OT, PT, or nursing) or those with rehabilitation, education, or other human services related degrees will be considered. Those with experience working with people with disabilities will be given preference.
