Job description

Sewage Maintenance And Operation Specialist

This position performs work in the maintenance and operation of the sanitary sewer collection system and the stormwater sewer system. Individuals assigned to this classification are expected to become competent in their skilled area and perform proficiently and independently assignments of a regular and reoccurring nature. Work is normally performed in accordance with established and well-known policies, procedures, and practices under frequent supervision until competency has been demonstrated. Employees of a higher classification may check progress of work and provide instruction on accomplishing work involving unusual problems or use of unfamiliar equipment.

Essential Duties

Perform all routine maintenance and repair work on sewer systems and facilities.

Make daily inspections of facilities and equipment, record data and correct problems as required.

Utilize asset management software to record and document work done and conditions of City assets.

Monitor temperature and pressure gauges.

Troubleshoot equipment failure or loss of efficiency, and operational problems.

Research manufacturer records and specifications to determine proper performance and operation standards.

Perform underground utility locates of the sewer system in accordance with regulations, as needed.

Maintain equipment and facilities in a clean and orderly condition. Perform landscape and maintenance duties as required.

Respond to, investigate, and record complaints, identify problems and recommend corrective actions. Refer to supervisor as appropriate.

Operate video inspection camera to inspect, record and document problems and sewer conditions.

Operate a variety of specialized equipment utilizing proper safety procedures and equipment.

Advise Supervisor of work progress and any changes in work conditions.

Monitor SCADA controlled equipment and process monitoring instrumentation related to sewer lift stations.

Read and record equipment hour meters. Conduct equipment operational exercises to ensure proper function.

Collect samples for lab tests in accordance with standard operating procedures.

Install flow monitoring instruments and collect associated data.

Assist in large projects and the resolution of emergencies in the area of assignment.

Assist in the implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities.

Work is performed under frequent supervision until competency has been demonstrated.

Predictable and regular attendance required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Basic knowledge of methods, techniques, materials, tools, and equipment used in maintenance and repair of the areas of assignment.

Basic knowledge and ability to read equipment instruction and maintenance manuals, and to read and work from drawings, schematics, and blueprints.

Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety practices, lock out tag out procedures and other procedures applicable to assigned work.

Knowledge of confined space procedures, trenching and shoring procedures, and use and containment of all hazardous chemicals used, or ability to obtain training within six (6) months.

Basic knowledge of safety equipment, including oxygen detection meter, blower, respirator, etc. or ability to obtain within six (6) months.

Ability to use and operate hand tools, mechanical equipment, and power tools and equipment required for work in a safe and efficient manner.

Ability to check complex electronic and mechanical equipment. Ability to operate a personal computer and asset management software.

Ability to make rapid and sound decisions in the event of extraordinary situations such as equipment malfunctions, power outages, and sewer system blockages to ensure correct operation of the sewer system and protect public health.

Ability to maintain records related to assigned activities. Ability to meet schedules and timelines.

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, and to follow instructions, both verbally and in writing.

Ability to work independently and apply departmental policies and procedures.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, department personnel, contractors, regulatory agencies, and the public.

Capacity for sustained attention to functioning machinery and equipment. Good sensory perception to monitor plant machinery and operations.

Ability to wear all required safety gear and protective equipment.

Physical strength, stamina, and agility sufficient to perform manual labor or engage in continuous physical effort for extended periods.

Excellent public relations skills.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.

U.S. Citizen or legally eligible to work in the United States.

Valid Washington State driver's license with a driving record acceptable to the City.

Valid Specialist in Training (SIT) certification from the Washington Wastewater Collections Personnel Association, (WWCPA), or the ability to obtain in twelve (12) months.

One year experience in Sewer Collections or in a similar position, or any combination of education and experience which provides competency.

First Aid and / or CPR certification, or ability to obtain within six (6) months.

Confined Spaces certification or the ability to obtain within six (6) months.

Washington State flagger card, or ability to obtain within six (6) months.

Successfully pass a Background check.
