Job Summary :

The Animal Care Technician will perform animal husbandry, health care, and research-related tasks in compliance with the Animal Welfare Act / Regulations, NIH Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and Client policies. Working under Biosafety Level 1 and 2 conditions, the technician will support animal care, scientific procedures, facility maintenance, and documentation processes. The role also includes assisting with experimental studies, performing health assessments, administering treatments, and supporting veterinary and research teams. This individual may provide guidance to junior team members and serve as a site representative on committees or workgroups.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Provide daily animal care and husbandry, including feeding, watering, and enrichment activities.
  • Maintain animal pens, feeders, and drinking systems; perform sanitation and repair as needed.
  • Document animal care, preventive medicine, and study-related activities in compliance with USDA and institutional policies.
  • Perform animal restraint, manipulation, and routine / emergency health procedures.
  • Identify and report signs of illness, distress, or abnormal behavior to the Site Veterinarian or Group / Team Leader.
  • Administer treatments and experimental test articles as directed by study protocols.
  • Conduct clinical observations, disease assessments, and collect scientific data accurately.
  • Assist in clinical R&D sample collection, including blood, fecal, and tissue samples.
  • Participate in necropsy procedures under supervision.
  • Maintain biosecurity protocols, perform water system sanitation, and assist in environmental audits.
  • May supervise or guide junior team members as delegated by leadership.
  • Support documentation and reporting related to AAALAC accreditation and other compliance activities.

Required Skills :

  • Knowledge of animal husbandry, care, and welfare assessment practices.
  • Ability to recognize and respond to animal health issues.
  • Competence in administering treatments and conducting scientific sample collection.
  • Proficiency in maintaining accurate and auditable documentation.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 70 lbs occasionally and 50 lbs frequently.
  • Comfortable working in extreme environmental conditions (hot, cold, humid, noisy).
  • Strong attention to detail, time management, and adherence to biosecurity standards.
  • Ability to work with animals during ante-mortem and post-mortem procedures.
  • No allergies to animals or livestock / feed dust.
  • Preferred Skills :

  • Experience working in research or agricultural animal care facilities.
  • Familiarity with biosafety protocols and laboratory procedures.
  • Prior involvement in AAALAC-accredited facilities.
  • Leadership or mentorship experience with animal care staff.
  • Certifications :

    Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) preferred.

    Training in animal handling and biosafety procedures (Biosafety Level 1 & 2) is desirable.

    Education :

    Minimum : High School Diploma or GED.

    Preferred : Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science, Veterinary Technology, Biology, or a related field.

    Certification : American Association for Laboratory Animal Science
