Why does the job exist?

This is a Manager position in a Juvenile Correctional Rehabilitation Facility. This position is required to provide coaching and mentoring for new and established employees; overseeing unit management, staff / schedule unit employees and influence positive behavioral changes in client population and retention of direct reports; ensure safe and secure custody of all assigned youth while ensuring that all youth are provided constitutional rights with special concerns for legal, medical and mental health issues; write reports and prepare required records regarding incidents, youth movement and noteworthy information; and ensure the documentation of all violations of facility operating procedures, rules and regulations and state and federal statues.

How does it get done?

Client Treatment

  • Provide care, paraprofessional counseling and security during group and individual activities to include cottage living, environment, school, recreation, work release and off-campus activities;
  • Provide individual and group counseling for clients with personal problems to include school work, drug / alcohol abuse, peer & staff relations, and daily activities;
  • Responsible for discerning and implementing discretionary and prudent decisions in the face of emotional and / or physical encounters with enraged, distraught and / or intoxicated juvenile residents or in emergency situations within the facility;
  • Transport juvenile clients to and from group activities, court, medical appointments, education, Work Release
  • Program and Community Service Programs or placements;

Client Safety, Security, and Control

  • Supervises and monitors on-going individual and group activities;
  • Searches of juveniles, living units and facility to determine presence of contraband and to secure it for disciplinary action;
  • Search for escaped juvenile clients;
  • Administrative Support and Record Keeping Supervision

  • Prepare accurate written reports;
  • Maintain confidential files;
  • Process court documents;
  • Supervision

  • Assign and monitor work of subordinates;
  • Train lower basic level on their job duties and responsibilities;
  • Lead shift or manage work unit as assigned in the absence of the supervisor.

    Ideal Candidate

  • Experience managing schedules and / or conducting activities or services.
  • Experience working with at-risk Juveniles in a secure environment.
  • Supervisory Experience, facilitating meetings, and delegating work assignments.
  • Experience with PeopleSoft HCM (SHARE) and FACTS.
  • Experience mentoring, training and developing junior staff.
  • Experience completing / conducting employee evaluations.
  • Supervisory / Management experience totaling 5 years or more.
  • Minimum Qualification

    Bachelor's Degree in psychology, guidance and counseling, penology, sociology, social work, and / or criminology and two (2) years of experience in a correctional setting, military duty, classroom teaching or instructing in a rehabilitative environment, supervising planned recreational activities, or active participation in community action programs, or for Correctional Officer Specialist positions, relevant work experience as it relates to the purpose of the position. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

    Employment Requirements

    Completion of the hiring process is contingent upon successful completion of pre-employment screening process. This position is designated a safety sensitive. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and / or drug testing. Employment requires successful completion of post offer pre-employment physical. Pre-employment criminal background check is required and conditional pending results.

    Working Conditions

    Potential risk from juvenile actions; this job could require running, lifting and possible physical intervention. Incumbents must be willing to accept changes in geographic assignment and be willing to work shifts, overtime, holidays, weekends and call back for emergencies. Incumbents must have a telephone and be willing to give the phone number to the supervisor. Some statewide travel may be required. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.
