Extra Help / Special Events Police Officer

The West Sacramento Police Department is seeking experienced law enforcement professionals to join our team in a part-time, extra help capacity to support special events and operations.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Provide law enforcement presence and security at A's games
  • Support operations at River Cats games and other special events
  • Assist with jail transport duties
  • Support full-time police officers during peak periods

As an as-needed employee, Extra Help / Special Events Police Officers are an "at-will" position and there is no guarantee of hours. Hours are limited to 999 in a fiscal year or 960 hours in a fiscal year for retired CalPERS annuitants.

Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee admittance into the examination process. Only the most qualified candidates who demonstrate the best combination of qualifications in relation to the requirements and duties of the position will be invited to test or interview.

Extra Help / Special Events Police Officer position within the Police Department will perform a variety of general law enforcement duties in excess of what can be fulfilled by full-time Police Officers. Appointment to this position is "at-will" with no rights to continued employment and receives no benefits.

Receives general supervision from assigned supervisory staff. May receive technical and functional direction from an assigned Officer In Charge or Field Training Officer. May provide technical and functional direction to other staff as assigned.

This is a sworn classification with full arrest and citation powers under California Penal Code. Incumbents are expected to perform the full range of duties assigned with only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise. As an as-needed employee, Extra Help / Special Events Police Officers are an "at-will" position and there is no guarantee of hours. Hours are limited to 999 in a fiscal year or 960 hours in a fiscal year for retired CalPERS annuitants.

Provide enforcement at special events such as baseball games, concerts and any other occasions which may cause a crowd to assemble or traffic to congest.

Participate in community outreach and homeless outreach efforts.

Conduct jail transports.

Patrol designated areas, by foot, by bicycle, or other means to preserve law and order.

Prepare a variety of reports including those on activities, operations, arrests made, and unusual incidents observed; prepare investigative reports and case information.

Apprehend and arrest offenders for crimes committed under federal, state, and local laws and codes.

Control and mitigate people under the influence of drugs or alcohol or other potentially hostile situations.

Investigate complaints and take appropriate action, which may include the use of deadly or non-deadly force.

Establish and preserve good relationships with the general public.

Enforce parking regulations; issue warning and citations for code violations.

Observe, monitor, and control routine and unusual traffic conditions; assist and advise motorists.

Discover and prevent the commission of crimes and enforce laws and ordinances.

Maintain awareness of and remain alert for wanted suspects, known criminals, stolen vehicles, missing persons, traffic violators, and crimes in progress.

Conduct investigations at scenes of incidents to which summoned, or incidents observed to determine what, if any, crime has been committed.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge and skill. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skill would be :

High school diploma or equivalent.

Equivalent of Ten (10) years full time experience in a municipal or general law enforcement agency, and currently employed as a Full Time or Part Time Peace Officer with a California Law Enforcement Agency; or Currently working as a Level I Reserve Police Officer with a California Law Enforcement Agency; or Retired as a Full Time Peace Officer with a California Law Enforcement Agency.

Possession of a valid California driver's license. Proof of possession of a current and valid California Intermediate POST Certificate.

All applicants, currently working for another law enforcement agency, are required to obtain authorization from their home agency Chief of Police / Sheriff authorizing them to work in an On Call basis for the City of West Sacramento prior to a background investigation being performed.

Extra Help positions with the City of West Sacramento are designated Tier I or Tier II extra help employees. Those hired as Tier I extra help employees must work less than 1,000 hours in a fiscal year and are not eligible for any City provided benefits, other than those required by law. Those hired as Tier II extra help employees are scheduled to work beyond 1,000 hours in a fiscal year, but not more than 1,500 hours. Tier II extra help employees receive pro-rated vacation, sick leave, and holiday benefits and are enrolled in the city's CalPERS retirement plan. The City does not participate in full Social Security, but does participate in Medicare. Extra help positions are considered "at will" positions.
