As an Audiology Extern you will work under the supervision of licensed staff audiologists. The extern serves as a specialist in hearing and vestibular (balance) systems. Evaluates, diagnoses, and treats hearing disorders and balance impairments for the pediatric to geriatric population. Determines type and degree of hearing impairment and implements habilitation and rehabilitation services for patient. Services include evaluation of hearing, hearing aid(s) fitting and dispensing including electro acoustical performance and real ear measurements, aural rehabilitation, evaluation of the vestibular system, counseling of patients and their families, documentation of results, correspondence with educational programs and third-party hearing aid funding sources, and discussion of patient results and needs with PCP and otolaryngologist. Work with other assistive listening devices if hearing aids are not an effective solution.


The position is a full-time appointment lasting 12 months. Start dates are determined on a case-by-case basis factoring in completion of coursework requirements and graduation dates.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Administers and interprets variety of tests to evaluate hearing and balance such as VNG, air and bone conduction, and speech reception and recorded discrimination tests, OAE's and ABR evaluations. These tests determine type and degree of hearing or balance impairment, site of damage, and effects on comprehension and speech
  • Evaluates test results in relation to behavioral, social, educational, and medical information obtained from patients, families, teachers, speech pathologists, ENT's, and other professionals to determine communication problems related to hearing disability
  • Plans and implements prevention, habilitation, or rehabilitation services, including hearing aid selection and orientation, ear mold impressions and dispensing, counseling, auditory training, speech conservation, repositioning and other treatment programs developed in consultation with Speech Pathologist and other professionals. Monitors progress of recommendations and treatment plan and reassesses as appropriate
  • Refers patient to physician, otolaryngologist, or surgeon if medical treatment is determined necessary. Works with PCP regarding referrals for other needed services
  • Calibrates equipment, prepares related reports, and maintains the audiological suite, materials, and supplies
  • Selects, fits, and dispenses amplification systems such as hearing aids and/or ALD's as part of a comprehensive habilitative/rehabilitative program. Uses advanced computerized procedures to individualize the fitting of hearing aids
  • Provide individual and family counseling to help those with hearing loss function more effectively in social, educational, and occupational environments. Maintains communication with the family and other treating professionals concerned with patients
  • Maintains accurate and timely records of services rendered to patients, including clinical and progress notes. Prepares statistical and other reports as needed for administrative analysis and activities
  • Informs Audiology Manager of situations needing improvement, intervention, or that affect the efficiency / effectiveness of the department. Works closely with Audiology Manager to improve or solve access issues. Assists in implementing and monitoring the department's quality assurance program

Required Qualifications:

  • Satisfactory completion of all prerequisite coursework as determined by the extern's doctoral academic program
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) may be required based on specialty
  • Professional experience working with the hearing impaired of various ages
  • Normal corrected hearing/listening skills
  • Skilled in preparing written patient evaluations
  • Interest in working with pediatrics and adults
  • Proven ability to relate to individuals of all ages. Excellent communication, language, and interpersonal skills
  • Must be eligible to work in the U.S. without company sponsorship, now or in the future, for employment-based work authorization (F-1 students with practical training and candidates requiring H-1Bs, TNs, etc. will not be considered)


Preferred Qualifications:

  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Ability to use American Sign Language or other languages


Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The hourly pay for this role will range from $18.00 to $32.00 per hour based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
