JOB SUMMARY :
The Porte Towne Magic Steel Pans Instructor is responsible for leading the Steel Pan ensemble within Porte Towne Magic! Portsmouth Public Schools premier divisionwide performing arts brand. This part-time instructor will teach foundational and intermediate steel pan performance techniques rehearse regularly with students and prepare the ensemble for performances throughout the school year. The instructor will work collaboratively with the Coordinator of Secondary Performing Arts and other Porte Towne Magic faculty to ensure artistic excellence and student engagement.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES :
Instruction & Rehearsal
- Lead weekly after-school rehearsals for the Porte Towne Magic Steel Pan Ensemble
- Teach proper technique rhythm ensemble performance skills and basic music theory as it applies to steel pan instruments
- Select and arrange music in collaboration with the Coordinator of Secondary Performing Arts when needed
- Prepare the ensemble for performances at division community and corporate events
Ensemble Management
Take attendance and maintain records of student participation and progressEnsure that instruments are cared for properly and report any equipment needs or damageReinforce discipline decorum and musical focus aligned with PPS performance standards and PTM expectationsCollaboration & Communication
Communicate regularly with the Coordinator of Secondary Performing Arts regarding :Rehearsal progress
Student needs and behaviorEquipment and repertoire updatesCoordinate performance logistics and stage needs in conjunction with other PTM faculty (Show Choir Pops Orchestra etc.)JOB SPECIFICATIONS / PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :

This is a part-time seasonal position aligned with the school calendar (fallsummer)Renewal is contingent upon performance student participation and available fundingWork Environment :
Rehearsals held at designated PPS rehearsal spaces (typically Churchland High School or other central PPS location)Some weekend and evening performances requiredOccasional off-site travel for community or corporate gigs (transportation coordinated by PPS)Position Type :
Part-Time / Seasonal (AugustJune; 46 hours / week with seasonal variation)
Evening and weekend availability required for rehearsals and performances
Compensation :
This is an hourly position at a rate of $25 per hour with hours varying based on the ensembles rehearsal and performance schedule.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :
Required :
Demonstrated expertise in steel pan performance and ensemble leadershipPrior experience teaching or leading student groups (school community or church-based programs)Strong interpersonal and classroom management skillsAbility to commit to a consistent rehearsal schedule and special eventsPreferred :
Bachelors degree in Music Education Music Performance or related field (or equivalent experience)Familiarity with public school settings and arts education programsExperience arranging or transcribing music for steel pan ensemblesAPPLICATION PROCEDURE :
