SUMMARY :
Maintains laboratory supply inventory at acceptable levels to assure the laboratory can perform its entire test menu with adherence to all state and federal regulations. On ‘as needed’ basis, accessions and sets up new microbiology cultures from patient specimens; assists in Pathology Department to perform applicable technical procedures after training and competency is established to support the Histology Technician and Pathologist.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :
- Accessions patient specimens for culture, gram stain, and other Microbiology procedures. Monitors pending logs to ascertain if specimens are missing and checks for additional testing by pathology required on the specimen.
- Plants patient specimens on culture media using established procedure with careful adherence to technique and completeness. Incubates inoculated culture media according to procedure.
- Assesses the need to order supplies, taking into consideration the number of supplies on hand, the usage over time, the availability of storage space and the need to maintain lot numbers to decrease calibration and correlation studies.
- Place orders with vendors of lab supplies on a regular basis to assure the supply stream of reagents.
- Maintain organization of the storeroom, refrigerators, and freezers in such a way that the supplies are easy to find, and the number of supplies is easily discernable to all lab personnel.
- Organize workload to assure that high priority tasks are completed, and the functioning of laboratory technical staff is accommodated to maximize patient care.
- Assists in orientation and training of staff
- Maintains and demonstrates professional skills through self-development and continuing education. Attends classes to develop skills.
- May be requested to perform other tasks as requested by the laboratory technical staff to assure that laboratory services are provided in a timely manner.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES :
Maintains neat and legible records as well as a neat and clean work area.Participates in the development, compliance with and updating standards for the area of responsibility. Participates in writing and updating policy and procedure manuals.Behavior shows a sense of service to our clients, indicating a model professional hospital behavior. Improves perceptions of department and hospital.Assists with special projects as needed.Uses effective verbal and written communication skills. Clearly and accurately communicates pertinent aspects of the patient’s care to other members of the health care team. Maintains positive and caring interpersonal relationships with patients, families, and co-workers.Reviews daily exception reports from billing system and responsible for manual entry of miscellaneous or additional charges.Other duties as assigned from time to time.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES : None
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS :
