Job description

We are seeking a design-driven Project Architect / Architectural Designer with 8+ years of experience to join our collaborative, interdisciplinary team. The ideal candidate brings strong design iteration and visualization skills, with the ability to develop and execute creative ideas across all project phases. Experience working on housing projects (affordable, urban multi-family, or student housing) is highly desired, along with a passion for creating equitable, community-focused design solutions. You will work alongside a team of architects, landscape architects, urban planners, interior designers, and consultants - fostering innovation and design excellence.

We currently collaborate in the office Monday through Thursday. Fridays can be in-office or WFH for most roles.

About Mithun

At Mithun, our design has purpose—to create positive change in people’s lives. We are an internationally recognized leader in sustainability, combining exemplary design with a focus on building and site performance, human health and social equity. Since the inception of the practice in 1949, our work has been recognized with hundreds of peer and industry awards including the 2023 AIA Architecture Firm Award, ULI Global Awards for Excellence and eight AIA Committee on the Environment Top Ten Awards, and numerous ASLA and CSLA awards.

We embrace justice, equity, diversity and inclusion (JEDI) as key expressions of our mission of Design for Positive Change. We are committed to promoting JEDI both internally and externally in our firm culture, project work and partnerships. A JUST organization since 2017, Mithun’s goal is not just good intentions but real impact for the people, communities and clients we serve.

  • Explore and develop conceptually strong and innovative design ideas for housing projects that address project goals aligned with Mithun’s values and approach.
  • Create compelling design presentations using advanced graphic skills.
  • Work collaboratively with interdisciplinary design teams and client representatives.
  • Create accurate architectural documentation for all phases of the design process.
  • May participate in project pursuits, client presentations and community engagement activities.
  • Assist with — or ideally lead — the coordination of multiple consultants and engineered systems.
  • Work effectively as both a team member and independently.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in architecture.
  • A minimum of 8 years of post-graduate professional experience, including work on housing projects such as affordable, urban multi-family or student housing is strongly preferred.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and visual communication skills.
  • Experience in all phases of design and documentation, with some exposure to construction administration processes.
  • Flexible to play multiple roles across varied project types.
  • Ability to lead Revit model development and adept at building information modeling.
  • Ability to define and drive project milestones, facilitate project meetings, and effectively coach team members.
  • Architectural registration is a plus.
  • Please submit your resume and relevant work samples.

Mithun benefits include medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance, parental leave, transit benefits, a 401(k) retirement plan and an annual discretionary bonus opportunity. We offer eight paid holidays, vacation accrual of two weeks per year, sick time accrual, and paid volunteer time. Flexible Spending Accounts or Health Savings Accounts are available based on eligibility requirements. The expected range of compensation for this role is $100,000 to $118,000 per year. Actual pay rates are based on experience, qualifications, internal equity and location.

Mithun is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

This position is based in our San Francisco, CA location.

If you are passionate about our mission but don’t see the right opportunity, please check back as our needs are always evolving.

If you need assistance or an accommodation to complete the application process due to a disability, please contact us here.

    Our Hiring Process

At Mithun, we approach the hiring process as a chance for you to get to know us, our interdisciplinary approach and the wide range of projects we engage in to make a positive impact in people’s lives. It’s also our opportunity to learn about you — your experience, talents, skills and potential to help shape our mission-driven work.

After you apply online through our Careers page, we review your application materials to learn about your background, experience and passions. We consider all applications, and if there’s a match between your background and our current needs, you may be invited to complete additional steps in the hiring process, including some or all of the following :

  • Phone Conversation : An initial 30-minute phone call to connect and explore your interests and the open position(s).
  • First Interview : A 45‑60 minute in‑person or video meeting with our team to discuss your experience. This includes a portfolio review (for design positions), discussion of your relevant experience, your design / work approach, and how you solve challenges. Team members can answer your questions and share direct information about what it’s like to work at Mithun. We’re happy to offer tips if you’re new to portfolio reviews or want guidance on how to prepare.
  • Second Interview : Another conversation (45‑60 minutes) with additional team members to dive deeper into your skills, knowledge and interests, and answer your remaining questions. Occasionally, we may invite you to a third interview.
  • Offer Decision : We will check references, select the most suitable candidate for the position and present an offer.
  • We are committed to making our recruitment process fair, accessible and encouraging. Our goal is for you to leave each step feeling informed, respected and excited about the possibility of joining our team.
