Senior Archaeologist (Southern California) Harris’ growing Environmental, Engineering and Consulting Division does industry-leading work in environmental planning and compliance, community planning and housing solutions, engineering design, municipal and district finance, and one water solutions.

Harris & Associates is looking for a Senior Archaeologist (Southern California) The Senior Archaeologist is responsible for leading cultural resources field work and analysis, preparation of technical documentation and reports, managing project schedules and budgets, and coordinating internal and external teams associated with project work and other environmental services activities.

This individual must have experience preparing environmental documents in compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.

The ideal candidate will be a Registered Professional Archaeologist who meets the Secretary of the Interior’s (SOI) Standards for Archaeology.

The Senior Archaeologist will be responsible for :

  • Conducting field work and tasks as related to cultural resources and lead teams conducting field work including pedestrian surveys, limited shovel test pits, and cultural monitoring.
  • Experience with cultural resources monitoring and compliance on construction projects.
  • Leading the preparation of or assisting in managing staff in preparing large, complex cultural resources documents such as Cultural Resources Technical Reports and other cultural resources documents consistent with regulatory requirements.
  • Operates as primary author or senior reviewer without guidance or assistance.
  • Manage tasks related to cultural resources, CEQA, and NEPA, including those being prepared by in-house staff and sub-consultants.
  • Managing projects / tasks that include all aspects of cultural analyses and can be creative in thinking to strategize best approaches for clients with regard to development of mitigation strategies and other project issues.
  • Conduct archival and record searches for project compliance and coordinate Native American consultations in compliance with Senate Bill 18 and Assembly Bill 52, when necessary.

Assist in recruiting, hiring, skill development, and mentoring cultural resources staff Apply cultural resources expertise to environmental analyses, special studies, regulatory permitting, surveys, and monitoring.

  • Providing cultural expertise and can guide and train junior and mid-level staff.
  • Provides mentorship to junior and mid-level staff.
  • Operates as primary point of contact for clients and resource agencies on projects.
  • Develops work breakdown structure for control and integrity of work to be performed as and defined by the contract.
  • Managing projects with large-scale field efforts and intensive schedules including compliance projects requiring adherence to permit conditions.
  • Performs project management duties such as forecasting, tracking, accounting updates, invoicing, progress reports, and scheduling.
  • Reviews contracts for understanding of scope, fee, schedule, and deliverables, and all other contractual obligations.
  • Monitors and analyzes project costs, commitments, accruals, and changes, and takes corrective action where necessary.
  • Qualifications & Skills Bachelor’s Degree in archaeology, historic architecture, or related field.
  • Must be a Registered Professional Archaeologist.
  • Minimum of 10-12 years of related work experience. 8 years of CEQA experience and cultural resources documentation.
  • Experience with managing complex projects .
  • Experience in leading field survey efforts of all sizes and managing field crew schedules.
  • Data management experience, including electronic data collection in field; managing large data sets.
  • Have a solid understanding of CEQA, NEPA, and other permitting requirements with regard to cultural resources protections.
  • Strong relationships with key clients and agency staff.
  • Ability to work in a high-paced environment where changing client priorities result in the need to determine creative ways to get the job done.
  • Candidate must be flexible and willing to support multiple projects.
  • Strong oral and written communication / interpersonal skills.
  • Interest in the mentoring and career development of junior and mid-level staff (experience preferred).
  • Work Environment & Travel The Senior Archaeologist must be capable of working in all climates including temperature extremes for long hours and be able to handle strenuous physical activity and conditions (i.e., hiking for hours a day for surveys).
  • Some travel may be required.
  • Compensation & Benefits The starting salary range for this position is $100,000-165,000.
  • This will be dependent on the experience and expertise of the incoming candidate.
