Traveling Protection & Control Engineer
National Electrical Engineering Consultants LLC is seeking an experienced Protection & Control Engineer to support critical utility and substation projects nationwide. This high-travel, field-first position is ideal for a systems-minded professional who thrives in fast-paced environments and brings strong technical expertise in protective relay systems, SCADA integration, and grid control logic. Operating on a 3-weeks-on, 1-week-off schedule, this full-time role offers an opportunity to lead and optimize the protection schemes that keep the nation's electrical infrastructure safe and reliable.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and commission substation protection and control systems (distribution and transmission level)
- Configure, test, and troubleshoot protective relays, communication protocols, and SCADA equipment
- Develop and review logic diagrams, one-line drawings, and wiring schematics
- Conduct site visits to support installation, system testing, and commissioning
- Interface with field crews, contractors, and utilities to ensure successful project delivery
- Provide technical guidance and QA / QC on control panel layouts, protection settings, and system interlocks
- Maintain compliance with NERC, IEEE, and utility-specific standards
- Produce technical documentation and detailed test reports for project deliverables
- Support system upgrades and retrofits as required for evolving grid conditions
Qualifications
Minimum 6 years of experience in Protection & Control engineeringBachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field (required)Deep understanding of protective relays, IEDs, and SCADA protocols (e.g., DNP3, Modbus)Strong knowledge testing SEL, GE, ABB, or similar relay platforms requiredCommissioning of electrical utilities AC and DC circuitsStrong technical writing and documentation skillsAbility to travel 100% on a 3-weeks-on, 1-week-off rotationExcellent problem-solving, communication, and team collaboration skillsValid driver's license and clean driving recordProficiency with relay software (e.g., SEL AcSELerator) and Microsoft OfficePreferred Qualifications
