Job description

Overview

As an Emergency Department Technician, you will play a vital role in supporting patient care under the supervision of the Patient Services Manager and Clinical Nurse. We encourage collaboration and value the importance of working closely with patients and their families, ensuring you contribute to their care experience with dignity and respect.

Your responsibilities will involve both direct and indirect patient care activities that are essential to delivering comprehensive and high-quality care in the Emergency Department.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in gathering and reporting vital patient information to support the nursing team in assessment, treatment, and evaluation.
  • Take and document vital signs as delegated by the RN.
  • Perform technical duties and selected procedures that ensure efficient and safe patient care.
  • Administer a 12-lead ECG and continuous Lead II, ensuring accurate patient information is recorded.
  • Support patient care with a focus on safety, considering the diverse needs of all patients.
  • Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to address patient and family needs with sensitivity.
  • Communicate professionally with patients, families, and colleagues.
  • Cover the Information Associate (IA) desk during absences, under the direction of the Patient Services Manager or their designee.
  • Maintain clinical competence and actively participate in unit activities that foster a cohesive team environment.
  • Attend all required continuing education and training sessions.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Minimum of a high school diploma or GED. Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or an educational equivalent such as Medical Assistant, Phlebotomy Technician, or a Student Nurse who has completed one semester of clinical experience is required. Additional relevant experience may be beneficial based on placement.

EXPERIENCE

Candidates should have either (A) Two (2) years of relevant direct patient care experience or (B) the educational qualifications stated above. Successful completion of the Patient Care Associate Competency-Based Training and / or unit-based Emergency Department Technical Competency-Based Training and Practicum is necessary.

SPECIAL SKILLS

Excellent communication skills are required to effectively interact with patients, families, peers, and supervisors. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to prioritize tasks and adapt plans based on patient and unit needs. Teamwork and an ability to accept direction is essential. CPR certification is mandatory.

PHYSICAL DEMAND

Must be able to lift a minimum of 40 pounds and perform tasks requiring physical endurance and dexterity. Consistent use of proper body mechanics is expected.
