The Engineering Director in Training is a developmental role designed for a skilled, hands‑on engineering professional who is ready to take the next step toward a Director of Engineering position. The hybrid role combines technical journeyman responsibilities with leadership training, providing exposure to all facets of hotel engineering management at Grand Hyatt San Francisco.
Responsibilities
Operational & Technical Duties
- Perform hands‑on maintenance and repair of hotel systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and kitchen equipment.
- Participate in and lead daily engineering operations, ensuring prompt completion of guestroom and public area maintenance requests.
- Support energy conservation initiatives and ensure compliance with environmental and sustainability standards.
- Oversee vendor relationships and supervise contractors performing work on‑site to ensure quality, safety, and timely completion.
- Conduct routine inspections of guest rooms, public spaces, and back‑of‑house areas to ensure compliance with brand and safety standards.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance requests, preventive maintenance programs, and asset management logs.
- Ensure all work is completed according to Hyatt safety and cleanliness standards and city, state, and federal codes.
Leadership & Administrative Development
Partner closely with the Director of Engineering to learn departmental budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.Assist in managing payroll, scheduling, and productivity goals for the Engineering team.Participate in and lead daily department meetings, safety briefings, and training sessions.Learn to develop, lead, and motivate a diverse team of engineers and maintenance technicians, fostering a positive and inclusive work culture.Act as the Manager on Duty for the Engineering department in the absence of the Director or Assistant Director.Serve as a liaison between Engineering and other hotel departments to ensure efficient communication and guest satisfaction.Benefits

Minimum of 5 years of hands‑on hotel or commercial building maintenance experience, preferably in a unionized or luxury hospitality environment.Proven journeyman‑level technical expertise in one or more disciplines (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, or mechanical systems).Prior leadership or supervisory experience preferred.Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and lead through example.Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills.Working knowledge of local building codes, OSHA regulations, and energy management systems.Proficiency with work order systems, Microsoft Office Suite, and maintenance management software.Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, evenings, and holidays as needed.Ability to stand, walk, and work on feet for extended periods.Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to moderate weight safely and regularly.All qualified candidates will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability or protected veteran status.
