Job Title : Phlebotomist

License : Certified Phlebotomist
Certifications : ASCP, AMT, CLSI or equivalent certification, Basic Life Support (BLS)
Must-Have :
Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.
Must be a graduate of a certified phlebotomy program or equivalent.
Must be able to communicate effectively with co-workers, patients, medical staff, visitors, and other personnel.
Must be able to make mature judgments.
Must possess a pleasant personality for dealing with patients.
Description :
Performs all work promptly and accurately.
Always collects blood from patients using venipuncture, arterial puncture, capillary puncture, or special techniques for patients with vascular-access devices according to established laboratory procedures.
Always verifies patient identification prior to specimen collection to ensure accurate testing.
Promptly responds to any request for specimen collection.
Communicates effectively with patient care areas or staff if any delay occurs.
Performs bedside glucose testing at specific times requested and adheres to all quality control standards before releasing results.
Prepares specimens for processing by accurately identifying appropriate specimens, delivering them to the appropriate department, entering all required patient information, and verifying the proper test has been ordered.
Instructs and assists patients with proper collection of specimens when necessary.
Always keeps work organized to avoid confusion and potential errors.
Promptly responds to and communicates effectively with anyone requiring assistance or service from the laboratory.
Provides information regarding proper specimen collection and handling for all laboratory testing.
Always seeks assistance from a supervisor when encountering difficulty in proper specimen handling or interpretation of physician orders.
Carefully prepares all specimens for reference laboratory testing by assuring proper specimen preservation and handling, accurate completion of requisitions, and accurate labeling of all specimen containers.
Always records initials for consultation if questions arise.
Communicates effectively and courteously with peers and all staff members.
Maintains all supplies and equipment for blood collection in an organized and clean manner at all times.
Assists with the distribution of reports to requested destinations.
Assists with glassware washing and distribution within the laboratory as needed.
Consistently works to achieve and maintain operations meeting the required standards.
Maintains current knowledge of laboratory and hospital policies and procedures as well as performance standards for personnel.
Demonstrates continual awareness and compliance with safety, infection control, and quality assurance procedures.
Advises supervisors of potential hazards when noted.
Demonstrates continued awareness and compliance with departmental and hospital policies and procedures.
Suggests improvements to laboratory services when appropriate.
Always complies with policies for the release of patient information and appropriately documents required information when reports are released.
Maintains all departmental equipment and supplies.
Maintains sufficient inventory of departmental reagents and supplies at all times.
Promptly submits information or requests to supervisors when additional materials are anticipated.
Maintains cost control in the utilization of materials and suggests ways to improve conservation as appropriate.
Rotates, dates, and tests reagents to ensure accuracy and avoid expiration.
Assists with the implementation of new procedures and evaluations of new products or equipment.
Evaluates new products and procedures and provides written information regarding findings to supervisors in a timely manner.
Suggests changes in methodologies or workflows to increase accuracy and efficiency.
Performs related and miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Accepts additional assignments as delegated by supervisors.
Voluntarily assists clerical and technical staff when the workload fluctuates.
Will be scheduled to work weekends or holidays as required for laboratory coverage as assigned by supervisors.
Shift rotation may be required for laboratory coverage and will be assigned based on seniority.
