POSITION / DEPARTMENT SUMMARY :
The SEL Instructor will lead dynamic, developmentally appropriate lessons that cultivate middle school students’ social-emotional growth. Through activities that promote self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making, the instructor will create a supportive and inclusive learning environment. This role empowers students to explore personal growth, build meaningful peer relationships, and strengthen confidence both in and outside the classroom.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Design and implement engaging weekly SEL lessons and interactive activities specifically tailored to middle school students.
- Foster a safe, respectful, and inclusive classroom where every student feels valued, supported, and encouraged to participate.
- Utilize a variety of instructional strategies, including group discussions, role plays, collaborative projects, and reflection exercises, to deepen students’ SEL learning.
- Guide students in applying social-emotional skills to real-world situations, both within the program and beyond.
- Collaborate closely with after-school staff to ensure SEL activities align with broader program goals and reinforce student development.
- Maintain accurate records of attendance and track student participation and progress, providing timely updates as needed.
- Respond to student needs with empathy and professionalism, consistently modeling positive social and emotional behaviors.
- Actively participate in staff meetings, training, and professional development opportunities to enhance instructional effectiveness.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS :
Bachelor’s degree in Education, Psychology, Social Work, Youth Development, or a related field preferred (or equivalent experience).Experience working with middle school youth in educational, after-school, or community-based settings.Knowledge of SEL frameworks, youth development principles, and culturally responsive practices.Strong facilitation and classroom management skills.Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving abilities.Ability to foster positive relationships with students, families, and staff.Flexibility, creativity, and a commitment to equity and inclusion.WORKING CONDITIONS :
Standing : Staff will be on their feet for extended periods (1-4 hours), especially during activities or supervision,fostering an active and engaging environment for the students.Walking and Movement : Frequent movement around the program space is essential to effectively supervisestudents, guide activities, and provide support during homework, ensuring a dynamic and interactive atmosphere.Lifting : Staff may need to lift materials (up to 20 pounds), such as books, supplies, or equipment for activities. Occasionally, lifting heavier items (up to 50 pounds) may be necessary, though this is rare and can be managed with assistance.Minimal Travel : While travel is generally not required, staff may occasionally need to travel to different programlocations within the local area, depending on departmental needs.
JOB DETAILS
Hourly Salary : $19-$22
Working schedule : Schedule may vary depending on program needs. (typically between 2 : 30 p.m. – 5 : 30 p.m.)
