Lateral Police Officer
The City of Tualatin is recruiting for a lateral police officer and creating an eligibility list for future lateral police officers. The following are the essential duties and responsibilities of a lateral police officer :
- Conducts investigations of reported criminal activity; responds to citizen requests for service; gathers crime scene evidence and takes latent fingerprints; interviews and takes statements from victims, witnesses, and suspects.
- Performs preventative patrol of city streets, residential and commercial areas of the city. Enforces traffic and criminal laws and City ordinances. Operates radar; checks property security; investigates road and safety hazards.
- Investigates traffic accidents; determines circumstances, takes statements, performs first aid, and requests appropriate assistance. Controls traffic flow and direction.
- Investigates reported crimes, interviews, interrogates, makes arrests, develops criminal cases for prosecution, and appears in court as a witness. Temporarily detains suspects in the holding facility. Transports prisoners as required.
- Prepares full and comprehensive reports on activities. Maintains complete and accurate records of activities performed on duty.
- Responds to calls for assistance, and performs public service functions for the citizens.
- Serves warrants and subpoenas.
- Receives training on a regular basis.
- Uses a computer to obtain various information and communicates using e-mail.
- Assists in the development of crime prevention programs and public relations activities of the department. Performs crime prevention community education functions.
- Assists the public by answering questions about laws, regulations, and ordinances.
- Drives to city facilities, vendors, training programs, and meetings as necessary.
- Rides a bicycle on patrol.
Qualifications for this position include :
Minimum age of 21 years.Graduation from high school or the equivalent.Status as a U. S. citizen; or 2) become a U.S. citizen within 18 months of employment as a police officer; or 3) status as a nonimmigrant legally admitted in the United States under a Compact of Free Association. Candidates hired under citizenship criterion two must obtain U.S. citizenship within the timeframe listed or may be subject to termination.Current State Certification as a Police Officer. Strong preference will be given to lateral officers with three years or more of experience, within the last five years, employed as a police officer.Knowledge of the criminal justice system and federal, state and local laws.Considerable knowledge of police investigative procedures and techniques.Possession of a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.Ability to maintain standard law enforcement equipment, i.e., firearms, body armor, chemical agents, uniform equipment, first aid supplies;Ability to become an officer which includes, but is not limited to, the ability to pass a written exam, pre-screening interview, oral board, extensive background check, physical agility test, psychological exam, drug screen and an employment entrance medical exam.Ability to work different shifts, which may include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.A comprehensive program of testing and examination will assess the persons :
