Role Overview :
The Plant Company is seeking a highly organized and proactive Buyer / Planner to support our fast-growing greenhouse production and distribution operations. This role is responsible for sourcing and purchasing materials, supplies, and services while optimizing cost, quality, and delivery. The Buyer / Planner manages supplier relationships, maintains accurate planning data, supports inventory and production scheduling, and proactively addresses supply chain issues to ensure operational continuity. Primary procurement responsibilities include production and assembly hard goods, consumable greenhouse supplies, and support for capital equipment and MRO (maintenance, repair, and operations) purchases.
Requirements :
Supplier & Vendor Management
- Identify, evaluate, and select suppliers based on quality, cost, reliability, and performance.
- Negotiate pricing, terms, contracts, lead times, and supply agreements.
- Maintain strong supplier relationships to support continuous improvement and responsiveness.
- Track and assess supplier performance with defined metrics (quality, delivery, cost, service).
Purchasing & Procurement Execution
Create, issue, and manage Purchase Orders in alignment with production and business needs.Follow up on open orders and expedite when required to avoid material shortages.Source new materials and suppliers to support changing production requirements and cost targets.Manage 3rd-party freight, customs / duties, and tariff-related documentation and cost tracking.Inventory & Material Planning
Maintain appropriate inventory levels to balance supply availability and working capital.Monitor usage trends and adjust reorder points, safety stock, and forecast accuracy.Partner with warehouse and receiving teams to resolve discrepancies and ensure timely material flow.Production Planning & Forecasting
Translate demand forecasts, sales plans, and production schedules into material and supply plans.Use ERP / MRP tools to maintain accurate item, supplier, cost, and lead-time data.Support new product and packaging initiatives, including materials sourcing and supplier coordination.Cost Management & Process Improvement
Identify, recommend, and lead initiatives that reduce total acquisition cost.Analyze spend, pricing trends, and supplier quotes to support negotiation strategies.Document supply chain processes and contribute to standard operating procedures.Participate in continuous improvement initiatives within operations and purchasing.Data Integrity & System Utilization
Maintain accurate item data, lead times, costs, supplier details, and procurement records in ERP / MRP systems.Track purchasing and supplier KPIs and prepare reporting for leadership.Support Accounts Payable with invoice reconciliation and ensure three-way match compliance.Skills & Qualifications
Required
Strong knowledge of purchasing, planning, and supply chain principles.Proficiency with ERP / MRP systems (SAP, Microsoft Dynamics, or similar).Strong analytical, negotiation, and communication skills.Advanced Excel / MS Office skills.Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced and seasonal production environment.Strong organization and attention to detail.Preferred
Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Business, Operations, or related field.5+ years of experience in purchasing, planning, or supply chain coordination.Experience with controlled-environment agriculture, manufacturing, or production industries.Physical Requirements
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.Must be able to bend, stoop, squat, and lift up to 15 lbs.Willingness to work in varying conditions, including heat, humidity, and exposure to typical greenhouse environments (smells, noise, allergens).The Plant Company is an equal opportunity employer.
