Business Services Specialist I
The City of Asheville is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Business Services Specialist I in the Transportation Department, Parking Services Division. The Transportation Department provides safe and reliable transportation services to support the City's mobility, accessibility, and sustainability goals. This position will provide specialized administrative, accounting, and program support to the department.
What you'll be doing :
- Provide administrative support for Transportation programs and activities, including documentation, manuals, training records, and audit compliance.
- Coordinate training activities, employee certifications, and maintain accurate records.
- Assist with contract renewals, bid solicitations, and change orders.
- Process permit applications, ensure compliance with ordinances, calculate fees, issue permits, and record activities.
- Process and maintain records for parking space closures, validations, and monthly parking accounts, and communicate with customers regarding the status of their applications and accounts.
- Screen telephone calls, mail, email, and other communications and initiate appropriate action / response.
- Support management and staff with scheduling, correspondence, meeting coordination, and travel arrangements.
- Serve as liaison between the Transportation Department, other departments, outside agencies, and the public to share information and coordinate activities.
- Enter and reconcile budget and financial data, assist with budget preparation, monitor expenditures, and process budget transfers.
- Review and process purchase requisitions, prepare purchase orders, verify invoices, and assign accounting codes.
- Perform data entry, maintain databases, compile reports, and ensure compliance with record retention requirements.

About you :
We know your time is valuable. Applicants who meet the following minimum requirements or have comparable experience and / or education will be considered :
At least one year of work experience that shows an ability to maintain steady employment in any field, AND an Associate degree in Administrative Services, Accounting, Business, or a related field, OR Three years of experience plus a High School Diploma / GEDPerformance aptitudes :
Ability to analyze and prioritize data, apply reasoning, and exercise judgment.Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to persuade, influence, and resolve problems.Ability to de-escalate situations and maintain professionalism when dealing with difficult customers.Ability to operate office equipment and software including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.Proficiency in mathematical operations including percentages, ratios, and reconciliations.Ability to work independently, interpret instructions, and adapt methods to meet objectives.Physical requirements :
Light physical effort in sedentary to light work, including some lifting and carrying of up to 10 pounds.Extended periods of work at a computer or workstation may be required.Tasks may require visual and auditory perception as well as oral communication.Persons of all genders and races are encouraged to apply.
