Job description

Deputy Sheriff

The Marion County Sheriff's Office is seeking both trainee and certified applicants to join our Institutions team. Marion County requires on-site work. Remote work is not available.

WAGES : $31.40 - $37.87 Trainee Pay Rate

  • $34.48 - $46.16 Certified Pay Rate
  • Hourly rate negotiable. In addition to the base pay rates above, Institutions Deputies may be eligible for a variety of pay incentives including : Certification 8% (4% for intermediate and 4% for advanced), Bilingual 5%, Field Training Officer 5%, Instructor 5%, Cell Extraction 5%, SWAT Team 5%, Longevity Pay.

Typical Duties - Duties include, but are not limited to the following :

  • Maintains security, sanitation, health, and medical standards by supervising adults in custody (AICs).
  • Ensures due process rights of AICs in disciplinary matters and that AIC rights to the legal system are maintained.
  • Ensures that AICs have access to materials, services and privileges according to the law.
  • Adheres to, implements and enforces job-related rules, policies, procedures and post orders in a manner which promotes the safe, secure and orderly operation of the facility.
  • Attends and participates in facility and unit briefings, meetings, and training.
  • Initiates and maintains neat, accurate and complete reports, memos, disciplinary reports, logbooks and unit rosters.
  • Works in a twenty-four (24) hour, seven (7) day a week facility which may require working day, swing and night shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
  • Remains constantly alert and observant the entire shift.
  • Controls access to and egress from the facility.
  • Conducts visual AIC welfare checks and counts, equipment and facility structural inspections.
  • Conducts tactile-clothed and visual-unclothed searches of AICs to discover contraband, and to ensure AIC welfare while incarcerated.
  • Conducts area searches to detect contraband or deficiencies in the security systems or physical structure of the facility.
  • Transports and escorts AICs inside and outside the facility.
  • Responds to and assists other staff in managing a variety of emergency situations.
  • Uses approved facility restraints in the control of AICs.
  • Operates fire-fighting equipment in the suppression of institutional fires.
  • Maintains and uses firearms.
  • Monitors audio traffic on the radios, telephones, and intercommunication systems, and acts as the central dispatch for the entire facility in routine and emergency situations.
  • Controls, issues, and records issuance of keys and radios.
  • Monitors auditory and visual emergency alarm systems.
  • Coordinates directly with the incident commander during emergency situations.
  • Uses audio-visual surveillance equipment to monitor movement in the hallways of the facility.
  • Verbally provides instructions and orders to adults in custody over the intercom for the safe, secure and orderly operation of the facility.
  • Requirements for the Position :

  • Must meet the following State Department of Public Safety Standards and Training requirements :
  • United States Citizen within one year of employment
  • At least 21 years of age at the time of employment
  • Declared by a physician as able to perform the physical duties required by the occupation.
  • Of good moral fitness, without legal conduct involving moral turpitude, dishonesty, fraud, deceit, misrepresentation, and conviction of drug and / or sex crimes.
  • Information regarding the minimum qualifications and physical requirements for Oregon law enforcement officers is available in section 259-008-0010 of the Oregon Administrative Rules.
  • Must meet the following Marion County requirements :
  • Must possess a valid Oregon driver's license, or obtain within 30 days of hire.
  • Finalists for this position are subject to an extensive background investigation.
  • Finalist will be required to pass a psychological and physical exam.
  • Ability to hold, aim, and discharge firearm with sufficient accuracy to maintain minimum department qualifications.
  • Must complete Field Training and Evaluation Program (FTEP) within first year of employment.
  • This is a safety sensitive / special needs position. Final candidates selected for this position will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screen, including testing for marijuana.
  • This position normally works rotating shifts, split shifts or other alternative work schedules.
  • Additional requirements for certified level :
  • Meets trainee level requirements; AND has eighteen months of experience as a corrections officer or deputy; OR any satisfactory combination of work, education, training, or experience relevant to the position, as determined by Marion County; AND
  • Possess a Basic Corrections Officer certification from the Department of Public Safety, Standards and Training (DPSST). If in possession of an out-of-state Corrections Officer certification, must attend and pass the DPSST Career Officer Development Course within one year of hire. Successful out-of-state applicants are hired at the Deputy Sheriff Trainee level and wage range until Oregon certification is achieved.
  • Two steps to move forward :

  • Applicants must complete ONE of the following academic proficiencies :
  • Recent (within the past twelve months) REACT test with National Testing Network (NTN); OR
  • Possess a four-year, post-secondary degree issued by an accredited, degree-granting college or university recognized by the Oregon Office of Degree Authorization under the provisions of ORS 348-604; OR
  • Successfully completed training resulting in the award of Basic Corrections certification from Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST).
