Status : 100% Full-Time, Exempt

Probation : 180 Days

DEPARTMENT SUMMARY : The Center's Marketing & Communications team functions as a full-service internal and external marketing and communications provider for the largest LGBTQ organization in the world. Scope of work includes media and press relations; supporting crisis and breaking news communications and events; website building, optimization, maintenance, and content creation; program and services collateral, communications, and support; graphic design copy; social media content recommendations; video and photography production; and email marketing. The team also provides overall organization brand support and promotion.

JOB SUMMARY : The Senior Advocacy Communication Manager plays a pivotal role in advancing the Los Angeles LGBT Center’s mission to create a world where LGBTQ+ people can thrive as healthy, equal, and complete members of society. As a key member of the Marketing & Communications team, this role ensures the Center’s advocacy efforts are amplified through strategic and impactful external communications. Reporting directly to the Head of Marketing & Communications, the role is responsible for overseeing, streamlining, and executing external-facing communications—including social media, newsletters, press outreach, and public messaging—specifically aligned with the organization’s key local, state, and federal policy-driven initiatives. This position will collaborate closely with the Policy and Community Department, and members of the Senior Team to craft compelling narratives that mobilize supporters, inform key stakeholders, and advance LGBTQ+ rights.

Advocacy Communications

  • Execute a comprehensive advocacy communications strategy aligned with the Center’s priority campaigns
  • Lead development of policy-related content, including press releases, talking points, action alerts, and advocacy emails
  • Manage external policy communications across platforms, including social media, toolkits, and editorial updates
  • Implement rapid response communications for breaking news and urgent policy developments
  • Serve as a spokesperson on policy issues when appropriate, delivering accurate and compelling messaging

Media & Public Engagement

  • Oversee media engagement for advocacy campaigns, with a focus on increasing earned media
  • Monitor media coverage and public discourse to inform communication strategy
  • Represent the Center at press conferences, community events, and stakeholder meetings
  • Participate in advocacy coalitions to support campaign communications and share best practices
  • Collaborate on public-facing events such as town halls, advocacy days, and policy briefings

    Strategic Collaboration & Coordination

  • Work closely with Policy & Community Building staff to align messaging with legislative priorities
  • Coordinate with Marketing & Communications to manage asset needs for policy initiatives
  • Maintain an editorial calendar that supports policy advocacy and community engagement goals
  • Oversee internal communications to ensure staff alignment on advocacy efforts

  • Prepare monthly and quarterly reports on communications impact, media engagement, and advocacy progress

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A passion for the Center’s work and its mission to make the world a better place for LGBTQ people
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in communications, including at least 2 years in policy advocacy communications

  • Understanding of communications needs around health and social services; strongly preferred
  • Experience in crafting pitches, managing media lists, and securing placements (in Los Angeles and beyond)
  • Commitment to community building within diverse communities preferred
  • Ability to work outside of business hours and weekends to support urgent communications
  • Access to reliable transportation and the ability to be insured
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people of diverse races, ethnicities, nationalities, sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expression, socio-economic backgrounds, religions, ages, English-speaking abilities, immigration status, and physical abilities in a multicultural environment
  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    Bilingual (Spanish / English strongly preferred)
