The nurse to patient ratio is 1 : 2. Common diagnoses include ventriculostomies, strokes with and without TPA, and craniectomies. RNs are required to titrate intravenous drips according to physician orders. The unit employs nurse aids / patient care technicians with a ratio of 9 : 1. RNs will troubleshoot respiratory therapy equipment, including vents, CPAP, and BiPAP. Tele / monitor technicians are available, and RNs are expected to read and interpret telemetry strips using Phillips monitors. The schedule consists of 12-hour shifts with rotating weekends and holidays. Travelers may float to other units, with a maximum ratio of 1 : 3 in intermediate care and 1 : 4 on general floors.
