Job Title

Operates heavy equipment used for refuse disposal at the landfill such as : backhoe, bulldozer, loader, front end loader, scraper, grader, or trash compactor, etc. Responsibilities include rough excavation, spreading, compaction, covering and finishing to a prescribed fine grade.

Essential Functions / Job Competencies / Physical Requirements

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES : The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

• Operates heavy landfill equipment, such as : scrapers, wheel type or crawler tractors with a dozer blade, landfill blade or bucket attachment, compactors, roll-off refuse trucks, loaders, motor graders, and pneumatic tire scrapers.
• Conducts pre-operation inspections of equipment, identifies equipment problems and reports problems to Landfill Supervisor for repairs.
• Performs basic maintenance on equipment and tools including washing, changing oil, and greasing.
• May assist in performing unskilled or semi-skilled labor such as installing fences, directing traffic, trimming trees, shrubs, and all other duties as needed to maintain the city landfill.
• May assist in training new employees and in assigning, checking and approving work of laborers and other equipment operators.
• Assists in maintaining good communication between staff, visitors and other business contacts.
• Must follow all rules of telephone and / or hand held radio courtesy in all communications.
• Performs other related duties.
