National Grid's Graduate Development Program (GDP) is a year-long development program for recent college graduates who aspire to take on future leadership roles in a dynamic, ever-changing industry. Graduates will shape the future of National Grid. Bringing fresh thinking, new perspectives, and exploring with energy, we'll give you real responsibility and an opportunity to move with purpose from day one - putting the power to supercharge your career in your hands.

Graduates start their careers at National Grid with an in-depth 3-week in-person Orientation which gives you exposure to all parts of the company, allows you to network with your Graduate cohort, GDP alumni, and senior leaders, and provides you with the opportunity to travel throughout our service territory in the northeast US. Following Orientation, you'll begin working in full-time position outlined below and take part in ongoing development activities including quarterly development sessions, active mentorship, and a Hackathon Project.

About the Position

Are you ready to step into the world of gas planning and design? As an Associate Engineer, you'll support senior engineers and contribute to exciting projects that help National Grid manage critical gas assets. Our team is focused on enhancing infrastructure, whether that is risk assessment of existing assets, designing new gas mains or implementing strategic plans for pressure regulating facilities, pipeline heaters, and automation tech throughout Massachusetts. This is a hybrid role based in Waltham, MA.

What You'll Do

In this role, you'll have an exciting opportunity to help shape our team and play a key part in essential infrastructure updates. Here's what you'll be up to :

  • Risk Management : Identify and address risks for gas assets, including pressure regulation, transmission, and LNG.
  • Asset Planning : Deliver informed technical asset plans for maintenance and capital investment to improve business performance over the next 5 years.
  • Business Case and Design Development : Translate gas asset infrastructure needs into clear business cases and budgets, facilitating the planning process, and completing proposed designs. (as needed)
  • Field Work : Participate in field investigations to evaluate existing asset conditions, potential new asset feasibility and construction review, and collaborate with various stakeholders.
  • Project Collaboration : Work closely with project engineers and other team members to maintain a reliable network and ensure potential hazards are managed safely and effectively.

What You'll Need

  • Bachelor or Master's degree in Chemical, Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution
  • Graduated between May 2025 and June 2026
  • Ability to begin the National Grid Graduate Program on June 8, 2026, or July 13, 2026
  • Valid driver's license required with a safe driving history that meets National Grid's Safe Driver policy
  • Work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States (such as sponsorship for an H-1B, TN, O, L, STEM OPT, or other employment-based work authorization)
  • It would be awesome if you

  • Completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam with the long-term goal of completing the Professional Engineer (PE) exam.

    Salary Range

    Waltham, MA $83,000 - $98,000 a year

    You must reside within our existing footprint, which includes contiguous states (New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Vermont). Our hybrid working approach applies to all colleagues who have a role which has the flexibility to be done hybrid across the National Grid group. Operational requirements mean that not all roles are suitable for hybrid working. Managers are responsible for determining whether a role is conducive to hybrid working. A hybrid worker should also reside within a reasonable, commutable distance to their assigned primary office.
