The City of Corona is seeking a skilled and motivated Public Works Permit Technician I / II Flex to join our dynamic team. This journey-level position plays a key role in reviewing technical plans, processing permits and ensuring compliance with city development standards. You'll work independently, exercise sound judgment, and provide exceptional customer service to homeowners, developers, contractors, and other agencies. From conducting plan checks and issuing permits to preparing reports and training staff, your contributions will directly impact the efficiency and quality of our public works operations. Public Works Permit Technician I : This is the entry-level classification in the Public Works Permit Technician series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform routine administrative and technical land development permit and plan review support work. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied, complex, and difficult; close supervision and frequent review of work lessen as an incumbent demonstrates skill to perform the work independently. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the Public Works Permit Technician II level but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise.

Public Works Permit Technician II : This is the fully qualified journey-level classification in the Public Works Permit Technician series. Positions at this level are distinguished from the Public Works Permit Technician I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, working independently, and exercising judgment and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be :

• Public Works Permit Technician I / II : Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.

Experience

This position is FLSA Non-Exempt, eligible for overtime compensation.

THE DEPARTMENT

The City of Corona's Planning and Development Department is composed of four key divisions : Planning, Building, Code Compliance, and Development Services. Together, they work to protect and enhance the city's physical environment while promoting a high quality of life for residents. The department oversees zoning regulations, building permits, inspections, and code enforcement, ensuring safe and sustainable development. It also provides resources and guidance for residential and commercial projects, including property improvements and land use planning. Through community engagement and long-term visioning, the department helps shape Corona's growth in alignment with its values and future goals.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Applications will be accepted until Sunday, November 30, 2025, at 11 : 59PM. The selection process will consist of a review and evaluation of all applicants' qualifications. Those applicants deemed to possess the most desirable qualifications will be invited to participate in an assessment and oral interview. The top scoring candidates from the oral interview will be placed on an eligibility list from which the department may hire. The eligibility list established from this recruitment may also be used to fill the current and / or additional vacancies throughout the City. The successful candidate will be required to undergo a reference / background check including livescan and pass a pre-employment medical examination (which will include a drug / alcohol screening).

THE ORGANIZATION

The City of Corona is a General Law city operating under a Council-Manager form of government. Policy making and legislative authority is vested in the City Council, consisting of a Mayor and four Council Members. Members of the City Council are elected by District to a four-year term. The Mayor is selected by the Council and serves as the presiding officer for one year.The City is organized into the following departments / organizational units : Community Services, City Manager's Office, Economic Development, Finance, Fire, Human Resources, Information Technology, Legal and Risk Management, Police, Planning & Development, Public Works, and Utilities. Oversight of these departments is divided between the City Manager and an Assistant City Manager. The City's total operating budget for Fiscal Year 2026 is $422.7 million with a General Fund operating budget of $231.3 million.
