Research Analyst Level 1

POSITION DESCRIPTION :

The Research Analyst Level 1 will support the Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC) by providing scientific analysis and research to assess the interactions between marine development activities and NOAA trust resources, including fish populations, protected species, habitats, and fishing communities. The analyst will contribute to regional ecosystem-scale monitoring and research efforts, conduct impact assessments of ocean-based development projects (e.g., offshore wind, marine carbon dioxide removal, mineral extraction), and curate scientific literature related to marine development. Key responsibilities include developing peer-reviewed manuscripts, managing an annotated citation library, and producing original research that supports NOAA Fisheries' science and regulatory missions. The role also involves providing scientific guidance to the Greater Atlantic Regional Fisheries Office (GARFO) during permitting processes and supporting collaborative initiatives that advance NOAA's understanding of development impacts on ecosystem health and fisheries management. Strong research, writing, and analytical skills are essential for success in this role.

RESPONSIBILITIES :

• Support scientific needs related to the co-existence of fisheries and marine development research and / or operations (including but not limited to ocean enrichment, marine carbon dioxide removal, marine critical minerals mining, offshore wind development, and other marine development activities or projects).
• Provide scientific support to both NEFSC and GARFO. To expand the available resources for evaluating potential impact on NOAA Trust Resources from o marine development, the NEFSC is seeking scientific capacity.
• Advance regional collaborative ecosystem-scale research and monitoring programs
• Analyze the effects and impacts of proposed developments at regional scales, including impacts on NOAA's scientific enterprise, e.g., surveys and 60+ stock assessments.
• Curate scientific materials and develop original manuscripts which explore the intersection of marine development and NOAA Trust Resources including fish, fisheries, essential fish habitat, protected species and fishing communities.
• Expand, curate and manage a shared, annotated citation library of marine development literature
• Lead, develop, write, and manage peer-review manuscripts to advance scientific knowledge on interactions between marine development and NOAA Trust Resources.
• Provide scientific advice to GARFO during the marine development permitting process.

REQUIREMENTS :

• Degree (Bachelors or Masters or PhD) in a field directly related to the task requirements.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in the field
