Job description

Nuclear Medicine Technologist

Schedule :

  • 40 hours a week from 7 : 00am to 3 : 30 pm.
  • Every other week call starting Monday till Sunday from end of shift till 6am next day.
  • Holidays are split between employees (if two people, then holidays will be split between the two), unless there's a PRN available.
  • Call includes ordering doses for patients added after hours.

Compensation :

  • 0 yoe - $34.18 / hr.
  • 20 yoe - $46.18

  • Top Skills / Must Haves :

  • ARRT (N) certification and / or NMTCB certification within 18 months of employment. BLS certification
  • None required beyond above education / certification requirements.
  • Level I must obtain ARRT or NMCTB certification within 18 months of employment.
  • Level II Minimum of two years' experience as a Nuclear Medicine technologist.
  • Level III A minimum of four years' experience within specialty modality in which they are seeking promotion.
  • At Duke Health Lake Norman, a Nuclear Medicine Technologist plays a vital role in diagnostic imaging by using radioactive materials to evaluate organ function and structure.

  • Prepare and administer radiopharmaceuticals for imaging or therapeutic purposes.
  • Operate imaging equipment such as :
  • Gamma cameras
  • SPECT (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography)
  • Scintillation detectors
  • Perform in vivo and in vitro studies, including thyroid scans, bone scans, cardiac stress tests, and renal function tests.
  • Process and evaluate images for diagnostic quality.
  • Monitor radiation safety, including contamination checks and disposal of radioactive materials.
  • Calibrate instruments and track radioactive decay for accurate dosing.
  • Provide patient care, including initiating life support if needed.
  • Assist in training new staff and students.
  • Document and maintain records related to radiopharmaceuticals and procedures.
  • The different modalities and technologies include :

  • SPECT Imaging Used for functional imaging of organs like the brain, heart, and bones.
  • Gamma Camera Imaging Captures radiation emitted from radiopharmaceuticals in the body.
  • In Vitro Counting Measures radioactivity in samples outside the body (e.g., blood or urine).
  • EKG Prep and Tracing Often used in conjunction with cardiac nuclear medicine studies.
  • Thyroid Therapy Administration Involves therapeutic use of radioactive iodine.
  • Brachytherapy Support Assists with procedures involving internal radiation treatment.
  • Requirements :

  • Ability to use office related computer software
  • Possess knowledge of radiation protection and safety
  • General computer knowledge
  • IV placement and management skills
  • Minimum Qualifications

    Graduate or completion of program that meets eligibility requirements for registry / certification or currently holds required registry or certification.

    None required beyond above education / certification requirements.

    Level I must obtain ARRT or NMCTB certification within 18 months of employment.

    Level II Minimum of two years' experience as a Nuclear Medicine technologist.

    Level III A minimum of four years' experience within specialty modality in which they are seeking promotion.
